In the Group Stage of the 2017 LoL World Championship, the four winners of the Play-In Knockouts will now face the 12 previously qualified teams from Europe, North America, China, South Korea, the LMS region (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao) and a Wildcard team. While the teams that have fought their way through the Play-In Stage are already warmed up, the other teams still have to show their skills for the first time in the Group Stage. The goals are different, of course – for SK Telecom T1, only another world championship title counts as full success, but a few teams like Longzhu Gaming or EDward Gaming want to foil this plan. For the teams of the EU LCS and NA LCS, the main focus is on advancing to the quarter-finals. Last year, H2K Gaming was the only western LoL team to go beyond the group stage. Which teams have a particularly good chance of advancing from the Group Stage and which teams were unlucky in the Group Draw?

Misfits vs. Team SoloMid
Start Time: October 8th, 01:00 AM PDT / 04:00 AM EDT / 10:00 CEST
Misfits were placed in a difficult position when they had to face off against Team WE, they were unable to rise above them and if they continue to have issues against these top performing teams then Europe, as a performing region, could fall short during this tournament. TSM are looking for a top position in this group but still have a few challenges ahead. Who will come out on top? Tune into the series when it goes live on Sunday, October 8th, to find out!
Misfits – MSF have had issues already and every European teams is falling into a similar pattern. Misfits will need to find a way on top of a few games if they want to make an impact. They still have time to prove themselves and rise through the group but there’s no more room for mistakes.
Team SoloMid – TSM are looking at taking a top position in the group so every performance matters, so far they’ve been able to put on strong and consistent performances but things could quickly become volatile in this particular group, they’re going to need to do more if they want to become more.
Prediction: Team Solo Mid Victory. TSM have already shown a formidable amount of strength and I think it’s going to continue as they facing off against another underwhelming European team. I expect the consistency and strength of TSM to carry them to the top of this series.
Fnatic vs. Longzhu Gaming
Start Time: October 8th, 03:00 AM PDT / 06:00 AM EDT / 12:00 CEST
Longzhu Gaming have already taken the position at the top of the group and they’ve had a significant impact so far. They’ve managed to put on strong and consistent performances, appearing to be one of the more formidable teams on the World’s stage. Fnatic have been having a hard time but if they want to prove their strengths then now would be a good time. Who will come out on top? Tune into the series when it goes live on Sunday, October 8th, to find out!
Fnatic – FNC have had a hard time at the World Championship 2017 so far and if they don’t find a stride of confidence soon they could be looking at a quick exit. Their top Lane has been having an extremely hard time so they’re definitely going to need to make a few adaptions, the potential is there though.
Longzhu Gaming – LZ were the top performing team from the most formidable region in the world. They were able to put on some extremely confident performances and their high level of play has been consistent, if they can maintain this throughout the World’s tournament then they’re going to have a significant impact.
Prediction: Longzhu Gaming Victory. Longzhu Gaming have already managed to take the top position in their group and they’ve put on some extremely convincing performances. As long as they can keep their confidence and morale up I don’t think they’ll run into too many issues, for now.
RNG vs. G2 Esports
Start Time: October 8th, 05:00 AM PDT / 08:00 AM EDT / 14:00 CEST
Royal Never Give Up are already making an impact and showing some strong performances during the World Championship tournament, they’ve taken down FB and have taken their first step forward. G2 Esports are having some issues, this could be their time to prove themselves. Who will come out on top? Tune into the series when it goes live on Sunday, October 8th, to find out!
Royal Never Give Up – RNG have made steps forward but if they want to progress they’re going to face more challenges, as days progress they’re only going to have a harder time. Their consistency and strength are going to be tested, can they keep up?
G2 Esports – G2 are already having a few issues, it’s not exactly surprising when we take their international performances history into account. If they don’t make improvement, adaptions, and step up quickly they’re only going to find themselves in more difficult situations.
Prediction: Royal Never Give Up Victory. RNG have already had an impact and I think they’re going to continue to make waves, they’ve shown great strength and if their consistency can keep up I expect them to come out on top of this series.
Team SoloMid vs. Team WE
Start Time: October 7th, 00:00 AM PDT / 03:00 AM EDT / 09:00 CEST
Both of these performing teams have shown some strengths, they’ve managed to take their position in the group stage through sheet skill. TSM took their position by dominating the North American region and Team WE dominated their play-ins group. Who will come out on top? Tune into the series when it goes live on Saturday, October 7th, to find out!
Team SoloMid – TSM were able to put on some significant performances in their own region but just how well can they perform on an international stage? They don’t have the greatest history when it comes to international performances, could this year be different?
Team WE – WE put on some truly dominating performances during the play-ins stage. They were able to take the top position in their group without much trouble at all. If they can continue to radiate this strength then TSM could be in serious trouble.
Prediction: Team WE Victory. Team WE have already put on a mass of phenomenal performances and I don’t think it’s going to stop yet, I expect this series to be a bit back and forth but ultimately I think the strengths of WE will give them the series.
G2 Esports vs. 1907 Fenerbahce
Start Time: October 7th, 02:00 AM PDT / 05:00 AM EDT / 11:00 CEST
G2 Esports are trying to make waves, struggling to make an impact. So far they’ve been unable to out on any substantial performances but if there’s a time that they’re going to then it’s going to be now. FB are going to use this series to prove their strengths, who will come out on top? Tune into the series when it goes live on Saturday, October 7th, to find out!
G2 Esports – G2 are trying to prove their strengths but in their latest series they were unable to make much of an impact. With each passing performances it seems the progression of G2 is slipping away, this is their chance to claw their way back.
1907 Fenerbahçe – FB have been pushing, during the play-ins they were able to cause ripples and put on some seriously significant performances, now we’re in the group stage and the level of play is rising, can FB keep up?
Prediction: G2 Esports Victory. If G2 are going to shine during the group stage it’s going to be against FB, they’re already struggling against the top performing teams from other regions but I think they have a slight edge over FB, I expect this to lead them on top of the series.
SK Telecom T1 vs. ahq e-Sports Club
Start Time: October 7th, 04:00 AM PDT / 07:00 AM EDT / 13:00 CEST
SKT have come a long way to defend their title and they’re going to have a more difficult time defending it this year. AHQ have been showing more fight and are likely to be a challenge. Who will come out on top? Tune into the series when it goes live on Saturday, October 7th, to find out!
SK Telecom T1 – SKT have shown a profound amount of potential and they’ve proven time and time again that when the pressure is on they can quickly become the best performing team in the world, but can they do the same again this year?
AHQ Esports Club – AHQ had a fairly strong summer split but their performances against the Flash Wolves during the playoffs really brought some of their performances into question. They’ve shown great strength previously, can it shine during such a pivotal moment?
Prediction: SK Telecom T1 Victory. SKTT1 have already been able to make an impact so far during the World Championship 2017 tournament and I don’t think they’re going to let AHQ get in their way. I expect the methodical style and formidable macro management of SKTT1 to propel them into a commanding position to take the series.
Flash Wolves vs. Team SoloMid
Start Time: October 6th, 00:00 AM PDT / 03:00 AM EDT / 09:00 CEST
Flash Wolves have had one of their stronger splits for a long time; they’ve been putting on consistent performances and have managed to maintain a high level of play. Team Solo Mid is in a similar boat but their style of play has appeared more volatile. Is this the time for FW to shine? Tune into the series when it goes live on Friday, October 6th, to find out!
Flash Wolves – Flash Wolves have been pushing hard in their own region, they managed to put on some dominant performances and took a quick victory during their playoff finals. They’ve managed to force their way into the group stage but this if often where things start to fall apart for them.
Team SoloMid – TSM have been dominating the North American region and they’ve been doing so for an entire season. They have managed to put on strong and consistent performances and have also adapted some odd, but apparently useful, style of play that could give them an edge over FW.
Prediction: Team SoloMid Victory. Flash Wolves have often had a hard time at international tournaments, unless they’re working as a formidable force to take down the Korean teams, and Team Solo Mid have been putting on exceptional, balanced, and consistent performances which I think will push them onto the top of this series.
Immortals vs. Fnatic
Start Time: October 6th, 02:00 AM PDT / 05:00 AM EDT / 11:00 CEST
Immortals are now representing North American in a series that will pull a significant amount of interest, the region rivalry continues as Fnatic will try to push back and claim a stronger position. What should we expect after the fairly recent Rift Rivals tournament? Will NA come out on top once more? Tune into the series on Friday, October 6th, to find out!
Immortals – IMT were able to claim 2nd place in North American, who’ve been performing stronger as a region in comparison to Europe. They were able to make improvements to their adaptions and macro management as the Summer Split progressed and we could see more improvements shine during this series.
Fnatic – FNC have pushed their way through the play-ins and have made their way to the group stage. They’ve definitely stepped up and have made improvements but some of their pressured decision making has been questionable. Can they make Europe great again?
Prediction: Immortals Victory. IMT have been more stable and their macro management has been more consistent. They’ve practiced in a region that’s been considered stronger than Europe since the Rift Rivals tournament and it’s likely that their strengths are going to carry them through the series.
Edward Gaming vs. SK Telecom T1
Start Time: October 6th, 05:00 AM PDT / 08:00 AM EDT / 14:00 CEST
There’s a rich competitive history spread between these 2 competing teams and SK Telecom T1 have often managed to take the better position, with SK Telecom T1 having weaker recent performances this could be the chance for EDG to capitalise. Who will come out on top? Tune into the series when it goes live on Friday, October 6th, to find out!
Edward Gaming – EDG have had one of their stronger splits in a long time, they were able to take 1st place during the round-robin along with 1st place during the playoffs. It was a little rough towards the end but they’ve proven to be a formidable titan.
SK Telecom T1 – SK Telecom T1 have often bested EDG because of their methodical style of play, with a lot of teams making those adaptions to improve macro management SKTT1 could see some trouble here. They’ve definitely shown a mastery of their style and I expect them to bring excitement to this series.
Prediction: SK Telecom T1 Victory. I think EDG are going to pressure SKTT1 a significant amount during this series and I’d like to see both teams make it to game 5. I think EDG have more potential during the earlier stages of the game, being able to capitalise on any advantages, but I expect the later perfections of SKTT1 to give them the series.
G2 Esports vs. Samsung Galaxy
Start Time: October 5th, 01:30 AM PDT / 04:30 AM EDT / 10:30 CEST
G2 Esports managed to take the top spot in the European region but their history of international performances is certainly against them. Samsung Galaxy had a hard time of their own, in the LCK region, but when push came to shove they were able to take a convincing series to prove their strength. Who will come out on top? Tune into the series when it goes live on Thursday, October 5th, to find out.
G2 Esports – G2 can undoubtedly put on strong performances but a lot of their strength comes from the early movements from their jungler, this can quickly become a volatile style of play. If the G2 jungler can keep up with the opposing player from SSG I think G2 could put on some strong performances during this series.
Samsung Galaxy – SSG have certainly got a lot to prove as they’re coming into this series, they’re one of the weaker teams from their region to qualify for the World Championship and now that the spotlight is on them they’ve got a lot to lose. If they can maintain their confidence I think they’re going to give G2 an extremely hard time during this series.
Prediction: Samsung Galaxy Victory. I think SSG will gain leads through their jungle and middle lane, and when SSG can gain a lead it can become extremely difficult to fight back against them. I expect G2 to put on some formidable performances during the series but with how quickly SSG have been improving I expect them to take the top spot in this series.
Longzhu Gaming vs. Immortals
Start Time: October 5th, 02:30 AM PDT / 05:30 AM EDT / 11:30 CEST
Longzhu managed to put on some phenomenal performances during their Summer Split and managed to take 1st place during the round-robin stage and also the playoffs. They’ve been pushing for greatness and have already taken down some formidable teams; can the 2nd place North American team hold them back? Tune into the series when it goes live on Thursday, October 5th, to find out!
Longzhu Gaming – LZ manage to take hold of the KR region and claim the throne, but how well will that carry over into an international tournament? They’ve shown phenomenal macro management and their confidence has previously appeared boundless, but this could also work against them. If they can remain consistent they’re going to be a threat to every competing team.
Immortals – IMT managed to take 2nd place in North America, during both the round-robin and the playoffs, which isn’t so bad. But when placed up against the top team from a region that’s often considered much stronger things could get extremely challenging. IMT are going to need to flex their adaption during this series if they want to catch LZ out.
Prediction: Longzhu Gaming Victory. I expect IMT to put on some challenging games but with how strong LZ have proven to be I don’t think IMT are going to be able to build the significant leads they’ll need to take the series. I think there could be a lot of action but I expect it to side in the favour of LZ as they take the series.
SK Telecom T1 vs. Cloud9
Start Time: October 5th, 04:30 AM PDT / 07:30 AM EDT / 13:30 CEST
SK Telecom T1 had a harder time in their home region during the Summer Split; they ended the round-robin phase in 4th place but managed to climb into 2nd during the playoffs. They’re a huge threat during this tournament because they’re defending champions. Cloud 9 had some issues of their own, in a region that’s widely considered weaker than that of SKTT1. Can they hold their own against the defending champions? Tune into the series when it goes live on Thursday, October 5th, to find out!
SK Telecom T1 – SKTT1 managed to push for improvement as their Summer Split was coming to a close, they pushed for the top but barely fell short. They were able to contest their series against Longzhu Gaming but eventually met defeat. They’re looking to defend their title now, putting everything they have into reaching the top.
Cloud 9 – C9 are going to have a hard time during this series, they’re from a region that has a rich history of weaker performances during the World Championship and they were also one of the weaker performing teams during the most recent summer split. They’ve certainly got a lot to prove.
Prediction: SK Telecom T1 Victory. I think C9 could put on some challenging performances here and I’d like to see a lot of action around the middle lane. I expect SKTT1 to have a harder time during the earlier stages of the game but it simply won’t hinder them, they’ve got phenomenal resource management and I think it’ll come into play during this series.
