Overwatch Basics – Gameplay Explained

Overwatch is a rather simple game when it comes to mechanics. It was one of the newer modern games to incorporate the MOBA playstyle into an FPS shooter (Team Fortress 2 comes to mind as one of the first to have done this).

In any case, the players take control of specific in-game characters that they choose once they enter the match. Each character comes equipped with one or two main weapons and a couple of special abilities.

On top of that, there are three main categories of characters (Heroes) – Tank, Damage, and Support. The goal of each team is to defeat the enemy team in a specific way, depending on the game mode.

There are four main game modes that you can end up playing – Assault, Escort, and Control. In combination with these, you may end up playing the Hybrid game mode (a mesh of Assault and Escort). You’ll also find the ‘Arcade’ game mode that is unique and requires playtime to truly understand. The Arcade mode is not used in pro play.

Overwatch requires an emphasis on quick-thinking, fast gameplay, and plenty of teamwork. There’s a reason why the Overwatch League is so prestigious, comes with a substantial prize pool, and features a franchised team system.

How to Start your Overwatch Esports Betting Career?

The Overwatch esports scene may not have the same, vast number of esports tournaments associated with it, but what it does have, is the world’s first ‘truly global professional esports league’.

What this means is that each team in the Overwatch League represents a certain global city (London, New York, Shanghai, etc.) and they’re constant members of the league. A hundred or so matches within a calendar year mean plenty of opportunities for punters to place their bets.

It’s also worth noting that some of these teams are owned by esports organizations from strong esports countries such as Gen.G for Seoul Dynasty, Cloud9 for London Spitfire, Misfits Gaming for Florida Mayhem, and more.

In any case, here’s how you can start your Overwatch esports betting career:

  1. Settle down on a preferred betting operator – Some punters argue that the most difficult part of betting is choosing a bookie. Each bookie is different and offers unique odds on most events. On top of that, they all support a wide variety of payment methods. To determine which bookie you like best, you should compare the odds, payment methods, and available betting markets.
  2. Create a user account – This process is rather simple, but it must be said that you should include your real name and other real-life information. Without it, you may not be eligible for betting bonuses or the bookie might completely prevent you from using their website.
  3. Set up your chosen payment method – Payment methods can vary greatly from bookie to bookie so make sure you’ve done your research before creating an account. Popular payment methods accepted at most bookmaker websites are cryptocurrency (predominantly Bitcoin), credit cards, and PayPal.
  4. Take some time to research the Overwatch esports scene – Betting without knowing anything about the esports you’re betting on is ill-advised. You can drastically increase your chances of placing winning bets by simply finding out as much info as you can about past events. On top of that, it’s recommended to look into the teams and players, as well as potential roster moves to create a viable betting strategy.
  5. Place a few bets and watch the live stream – Don’t go overboard with your bets just yet; it takes time to get better at betting and the same can be said here. Take your time and place a few starter bets to test the waters. Put up the live stream and watch the matches as they unfold. This will also provide you with a certain dose of information that might end up being crucial in the betting long run.

Overwatch Betting Markets

  • Match Winner – One of the easiest and simplest betting markets out there, match winner bets require you to bet on one of two teams that you think will win the matchup.
  • Outrights – Outrights are simple in definition but difficult in execution. With them, you’ll be placing a bet on the team you think will take the whole shebang. The odds for outrights are excellent but they’re generally difficult to get right.
  • Total Kills (over/under) – Another simple bet that isn’t too difficult and comes with nice odds, the over/under for total kills (either the sum of both teams or just one team) has you choose whether you think there will be more kills than what the prompt says or less.
  • Player vs Player – An enticing bet, especially for those that follow certain players closely, with this betting markets punters can expect to choose between one of two players that they think will have more kills than the other.
  • Special Bets – Special bets are bets that are seldom found across multiple bookies, and they revolve around specific in-game mechanics. For example, first blood betting sees punters place bets on the player they think will get the first kill of the game.

Overwatch Betting Odds

There are currently no available Overwatch League odds to be mentioned but there is a way with which you can somewhat determine what the odds will be. Simply take a look at the previous Overwatch League event and see how the teams finished.

The top teams will have lesser odds on them while the bottom teams will have strong odds assigned to them. In any case, this section will be updated as we draw closer to the beginning of the new Overwatch League season.

Overwatch Esports Betting Tips

We’ve gotten the Overwatch betting basics out of the way and now it’s time for a couple of tips to help you on your journey.

Risky bets can pay off

Although most beginners choose safer bets, they aren’t always the best choice. For starters, you can only win a meaningful amount by creating a betting slip with multiple safe bets. They’re also somewhat deceiving; a team may be the favourites to win but it doesn’t mean that they’ll play well. It may be worthwhile placing a dark horse bet that is risky but has exceptional odds associated with it.

Keep a cool, calm, and collected head

Continuing from the previous point, no matter what happens, you need to stay calm and collected. An emotional reaction is common in the betting world, but it can quickly get out of hand when punters try more aggressive strategies to win back the money they lost. This is especially true if you’re a fan of a specific team – whether that team is strong or weak, it’s not always a good idea to place a bet on them just because you like them. Keep emotions out of it!

Research the Overwatch esports scene

The only way to truly get better at Overwatch esports betting is by getting to know the esports side of the game. This includes players, teams, tournaments, and even coaches. The more you know, the more precise your outcome predictions will be, ultimately leading to a better betting experience. All it takes is some research and a willingness to learn and you’ll be well on your way to increasing your winnings and improving your chances.

Get to know the game itself

There’s no better method to equating yourself with other Overwatch punters than by playing the game itself. There’s only so much you can learn by reading or watching whereas by playing Overwatch, you’ll basically learn all there is. Who knows, the game might appeal to you and could cause you to become a regular player!

Watch live streams

Lastly, live streams. Every Overwatch event, tournament, and match is hosted on their official broadcasting channels (YouTube and Twitch). Watching live matches doesn’t just further your own knowledge of the game but it also provides you with an opportunity to place live bets. That’s right, some betting operators feature live betting on their platforms and live streams are the only way to make smart, reactive betting decisions.

San Francisco Shock

San Francisco Shock is the definition of Overwatch League. They’ve been the absolute dominant force in the league and have managed to win 2 championships in the past (2019 and 2020).

They’ve also earned the most – a whopping $3.4 million since their Overwatch esports start in 2017/2018. Continuing with their exceptional esports performances, San Francisco Shock remains the only OWL team to complete a golden stage – not losing a single map throughout the stage.

Their 28-win record is still untouched – since 2019! Although their current roster of Viol2t, FiNN, kilo, Proper, and Coluge haven’t been there from the start, they’re still a pretty strong pairing. With that said, the team finished 4th in the last Overwatch League so a change at the top may be coming.

Shanghai Dragons

Shanghai Dragons have won the OWL 2021 Regular Season and are looking to continue their great form into 2022. However, it wasn’t always like this. In the early days of the Overwatch League, Shanghai Dragons were often touted as a meme team that always finished in lowly positions.

But, following a change of roster in 2019, they’ve slowly started taking win after win, ultimately dispatching the strongest Overwatch teams in stunning fashion. They currently have 8 players on the roster that sometimes get rotated, but the 5 players who have been on the team the longest are Izayaki, Fleta, LIP, Void, and LeeJaeGon.

London Spitfire

London Spitfire are the old guard within the Overwatch esports community, having been around since OWL’s inception. They’re also the winners of the Overwatch League inaugural season after dispatching Philadelphia Fusion in the playoffs 2-0.

Unfortunately, the team hasn’t been quite up to snuff in recent times, constantly struggling to finish in meaningful positions. They only managed an 18th (out of 20) place in the previous iteration of the Overwatch League.

They do, however, have a rather new roster consisting of SparkR, Shax, Hadi, Poko, and provide. Considering this roster is an unknown, they could either start climbing to the top or remain in their current position at the bottom. We’ll just have to wait and see!

Overwatch FAQs

There is currently no confirmed release date for Overwatch 2 but according to rumours, we might see the game in late 2022 or early 2023. There have also been talks of pros running a limited version of Overwatch 2 in certain esports events but – no further info about this has been released.

Any of the 10 betting operators that we mentioned at the beginning of this article will do, but some of the best you can use are Vulkanbet, Rivalry, and LOOT.BET. They have some pretty great odds and betting markets on offer for Overwatch esports tournaments.

Overwatch can be considered both a MOBA and an FPS game. For starters, the in-game mechanics are similar to what MOBA games represent – destroying the enemy objectives and structures with your team.

However, since it’s predominantly a shooter (it must be said that alongside guns, characters have abilities as well) from the First-Person view, it is also an FPS game.

The Overwatch League is Overwatch’s largest and most prestigious esports tournament with franchised teams that represent cities worldwide. It is the culmination of Overwatch esports where the best players compete against opposing teams to win glory and a hefty prize at the end of the season.

The player that has earned the most playing Overwatch is Yoo, Myeong Hwan, otherwise known as ‘smurf’, a South Korean player that’s currently competing Seoul Dynasty. He has earned an impressive $355,350.
