Overwatch Bet Types
There are several ways to bet on Overwatch, from very simple and clear cut moneyline bets, to more specific spreads and totals options. With the wide range of available bets at your disposal, there will definitely be a wager that is just right for you. You can view the list of available betting markets for the latest Overwatch esports events from your chosen bookmakers’ esports page. Let’s go through the most common betting options and find out the pros and cons for each.
Moneyline wagers are arguably the simplest and most straightforward betting option for most people. Because each series between two teams is best of five, you would have to pick which team you think will win 3 of those 5 matches. All you have to do for this type of bet is pick which team you think will win the series, and nothing other than the final results counts to whether or not you win your wager. This is an attractive option for most esports bettors as in many competitive esports matches both teams have a very realistic chance of winning. This option is even better when there is an obvious superior team, making your overwatch odds and returns consequently better.
Using our New York Excelsior and Shanghai Dragons example, let’s see how moneyline wagers would play out. New York Excelsior in this instance are a (-950) favourite and are up against Shanghai Dragons (+500). This betting option would work really well if you are betting for the favourite, New York Excelsior, to win. On the other hand, it would be less than ideal to bet on the Shanghai Dragons as the chance of them winning would be extremely unlikely and consequently not worth it.
Spreads go into more detail when placing your bet as you need to change the number of points that a team needs to win or lose by. So, in this example not only would you think New York Excelsior are going to win against Shanghai Dragons, but you would also think they’re going to sweep them with a clean 3-0 victory.
Because there is more detail added to this bet, you can get much better odds. But, of course, that comes with more risk as you will need to be more precise in how your chosen team will win. This type of bet works well if you are betting against the favourite as there is more of a chance you will get return on your wager.
For example, the New York Excelsior and Shanghai Dragons match might be listed with a spread of New York Excelsior – 2.5 (-115) vs. Shanghai Dragons +2.5 (-120). The spread shows that New York Excelsior must win by a margin of at least 2.5 games and Shanghai Dragons would only have to win one game for the bet to be successful, even if they lose the series.
Totals are wagers that consider the total number of games played rather than which team will win the series. In Overwatch specifically, you’re likely to see total options of 3.5 or 4.5 because there is a maximum of 5 games within each series. These options give you the chance to decide on whether you think there will be three, four, or five games played in the series you want to bet on. This type of wager is usually represented by OVER or UNDER next to the number stated.
For example, if you choose UNDER 3.5, you are betting that the series will go on for less than four games. Alternatively, if you place a bet on OVER 3.5, you are indicating that the series will go on for more than four games.
Futures are another simple wager option which only factors in who the overall winner will be. Typically, this type of bet will open at the start of the Overwatch season. Because these types of wagers are long-term, the odds on this option constantly chance depending on the outcome of each series. Note that the price you bet them at cannot be changed during the event.
A typical futures Overwatch bet looks like this:
San Francisco Shock: -170
Seoul Dynasty: +355
Houston Outlaws: +675
Philadelphia Fusion: +250
These types of bets will give you an option for every team in the Overwatch League, with the odds being presented depending on the likelihood that they are going to win the whole season. The above example shows that the San Francisco Shock are the favourite and the Houston Outlaws are considered the greatest underdog.
Prop bets require a more seasoned knowledge of the game. They are wagers that are based on events such as map score and map round that may not even cause any impact to the outcome of the match. If you’re familiar with the ins and outs of Overwatch and have a solid understanding of the different options the game presents when playing, this could be a worthwhile wager for you.
Here are the most popular prop bets:
Correct map score – Predicting if a team will win a certain map.
Map round picks – Betting on whether or not the fifth round will be played.
Correct game score – Anticipate the exact score the series will end on.
Overwatch is quite different to other esports titles like CS:GO and League of Legends and because of this, there are fewer prop options than typically available. However, there are still some solid options to choose from if you are more familiar with the game.

Overwatch live betting
Live betting, also known as in-game betting or betting in running, gives you the opportunity to place wagers after the game has already started. This type of Overwatch betting is most useful for a seasoned overwatch player as it requires more information about the game, thus posing greater risk.
To live bet on Overwatch you will need to watch the stream live on YouTube.
You can bet live on how you think the series for each set of teams will play out, giving you great and worthwhile odds if your wager is successful.
Overwatch Tournaments to bet on
You can easily choose your favorite Overwatch tournament to bet on from those listed below:
The Overwatch League
The Overwatch League is the annual esports tournament for Overwatch. The tournament follows a particularly traditional model incorporated by many North American professional sporting leagues. Because of the similarities to traditional sports betting, placing bets on Overwatch is a lot easier than it initially seems. After Overwatch Leagues’ inaugural season taking place in 2018, the league has seen a significant rise in popularity as well as betting, making it a worthwhile esport to start betting on. 20 teams compete in the Overwatch League every season for the chance to be crowned the Overwatch League champions. These 20 teams are subdivided into two divisions, Atlantic and Pacific, playing pre scheduled matches against each other to compete for their position in the season’s playoffs.
The 2020 Overwatch League saw San Francisco winning the season and placed them as the first two-time back-to-back champions. With it now being the off-season comes roster changes that are critical when predicting how the 2021 season will play out. The deadline for teams to sign a minimum of seven players is soon approaching and here are some key roster changes that have been announced so far. SLIME from Seoul Dynasty and Los Angeles Gladiators’ main tank player, OGE, have both parted ways from their 2020 teams and transferred to Florida Mayhem. DPS favourite, Saebyeolbe, from New York Excelsior has moved onto Seoul Dynasty and two time winners, San Francisco Shock, and their support, Moth, have said their goodbyes as he moves on to Los Angeles Gladiators.
This structure differs from the promotion and regulation approach used in other esports leagues and has seen some changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The league introduced a home-and-away format for the 2020 season but had to adapt to a bimonthly tournament-based season in April due to the global impact of the virus. The shift to a North America and Asia Pacific tournament model will run over in the 2021 league season with Jon Spector, the Vice President of the Overwatch League, hinting that there will be changes to optimise the newly found format.
These changes are massive and it’s best to stay up to date with roster changes in off seasons as these team changes heavily impact a teams’ performances in upcoming seasons.
Overwatch Contenders: The Gauntlet
The Overwatch Contenders Gauntlet takes place over 2 weekends in December every year and gives Tier 2 teams the chance to battle it out to be crowned the winners and receive their regional prize pool. The Contenders Gauntlet takes place online and in four regions: Asia, South America, North America, and Europe. The Gauntlet format consists of two stages: an open qualifier tournament accessible to all teams and a Knockout stage consisting of November Contenders and the four finalists from the open qualifiers.
The Overwatch World Cup
The Overwatch World Cup (OW World Cup) is the annual Overwatch esports tournament that gives a platform for all national Overwatch teams to prove their skills, separate from the contenders and the Overwatch League scene. The tournament format has shifted over the years, with the 2019 World Cup’s format consisting of three stages: The preliminary round, group stages, and ending with playoffs.
The preliminary stage allows any country wishing to compete in a single-elimination seeded bracket. However, five countries are automatically enrolled in the group stages based on the tip five national rankings. The group stages separates the top ten countries into two groups, with the top country from each group moving to the semifinals and the winners from there progressing to the playoffs.
Overwatch World Cup betting follows the exact same structure as Overwatch League betting so familiarise yourself with the OW World Cup format and get started.

The different types of betting odds for Overwatch
Overwatch betting and traditional sports betting are similar in a number of ways. Bettors are required to select which team they believe will win a match, with different betting options that will be explained below. The end result of the match will be determined by the prediction on the likelihood or unlikelihood of that team winning by the oddsmakers. Being able to read the different types of Overwatch betting odds is compulsory so you can build your understanding of what is being presented to you and determine whether or not you are getting a price that is reasonable for your wager.
There are three main ways Overwatch betting odds are presented: Fractional Overwatch odds, decimal Overwatch odds, and moneyline overwatch odds. These three types of odds will be displayed differently depending on which region you’re betting from and which sites you are placing your bets with. It’s important to understand how to calculate the probability of each betting type and how much profit you will make from each bet you place in order to wager the best bets for yourself.
Let’s take a look at what these types of betting odds look like in action. For this example, we’ll be using an Overwatch League odds match between New York Excelsior and Shanghai Dragons.
Fractional Overwatch odds
If you are planning to use British Overwatch betting sites, you will see fractional odds most frequently. These types of odds display the chance of winning in fraction form which allows you to convert it into a percentage. These types of betting odds are easier to break down into probabilities than moneyline odds.
An easy way to figure out which team is more favourable is by taking a look at the numbers presented in the fraction. If the number of the right exceeds the left number, the bookmaker believes that team is a favourite and expects them to win the match. However, if the number on the left is bigger, that team is presented as the underdog. Note that there is no exception here, bookmakers can and do make mistakes so it's great if you can capitalise on these instances when creating your Overwatch esports betting strategy.
To contextualise fractional odds in a common scenario, let's apply this to an example series between New York Excelsior and Shanghai Dragons. According to the bookmaker, the odds are 5/1 for Shanghai Dragons, equating to a 17% chance of them winning. To calculate this percentage you would do this equation:
5/1 = 1/(5+1)* 100% = 16.67%
The most important thing to consider in your esports strategy is calculating your payout. Let’s see how you can work this out with fractional odds. All you have to do is take a look at the left and right number, the former is the amount you’ll receive if the team wins and the latter is the amount you need to wager to get it.
An example of how these odds translate to payouts looks like this:
10/1 – For every £1 you wager, you win £10
45/15 – For each £15 you wager, you win £45
1/5 – For each £5 you wager, you will win £1
2/10 – For each £10 you wager, you will win £2
You can analyse the return on investment on each of these wagers by putting a maximum of £30 in and calculating the possible winnings. As you can see from this example, you would get the highest winnings from the first wager (10/1) because if you put in £30 and the team wins, you will receive a total of £300, whereas you would win £90, £6, and £5 for the other bets respectively. The first two betting scenarios pose a higher chance of you losing your stake as it is less likely to happen and the last two are pretty accurate so the return is a lot lower. Understanding how payouts work with fractional odds are essential as you are then able to weigh up the risks against potential profits.
Decimal Overwatch odds
Decimal Overwatch odds are imperative to understand too as they are slowly overtaking fractional Overwatch odds in the UK. The decimal displayed for each match combines your stake and your winnings instead of merely highlighting profits as is shown when using fractional betting odds.
This presentation of odds is a lot more convenient and simpler for you, making it increasingly less hassle to calculate your wager. Be aware that the presentation of decimal odds combines your stake and your winnings, giving you the total on how much money you will make once you win the chosen bet. To calculate the probability of your wager, you would need to simply divide 100% by the value of the decimal odds. To quickly understand what your wager means, you can just look at the decimal itself; the higher the decimal odds, the less chances you have to win.
Here are examples of how to calculate a decimal odds’ probability:
2.75: 100% / 2.75 = 36.36%
1.7: 100% / 1.7 = 58.82%
4.5: 100% / 4.5 = 22.22%
Now that you’ve calculated the probability of your potential wager, you can figure out the payout of the decimal odds. You simply have to multiply your wager by the decimal odds. Different amounts of money that you place on decimal odds will give you different payouts.
For example, looking at the decimal odds 1.7, lets take a look at how much profit you’d receive when wagering these amounts:
£3 = £3 x 1.7 = £5.10
£10 = £10 x 1.7 = £17
£20 = £20 x 1.7 = £34
£80 = £80 x 1.7 = £136
It is best to be mindful that this amount includes your original stake, but it's still a lot easier to calculate how much money will go back into your account after you win your bet.
Moneyline Overwatch odds
Lastly, Moneyline Overwatch odds are commonly displayed in the US and although they aren't as common in other parts of the world, you might have to deal with them while making Overwatch bets so it’s useful to understand how these work.
These bets consist of numbers with respect to -100. The number displayed changes based on the likelihood of a team winning. Specifically, the minus sign (-) indicates the favoured side and the plus sign (+) highlights the underdog. The two kinds of moneyline odds are positive (+) and negative (-), with the positive type demonstrating your winnings if you were to bet $100 and the negative type showing how much you need to bet to gain $100.
Using the New York Excelsior and Shanghai Dragons match up as our example, the odds of this Overwatch match may look something like this:
New York Excelsior – 150
Shanghai Dragons + 200
As the New York Excelsior’s have a minus (-) sign attached to them, this indicates that they are the favourite in this match up. Because they are seen to most likely win this series, the odds are lower and the (-150) demonstrates that you will need to wager $150 to net you a profit of $100.
Although Shanghai Dragons are perceived as the underdog in this prediction and have a positive (+) sign attached to them, you can still win by placing a wager on them. Instead of the number (+200) showing you how much you need to bet to make profit, it actually tells you how much you would win if you placed a $100 bet on them. From our example, betting a $100 wager would result in twice as much return, netting you an extra $200.
Each match up has different positive and negative odds so here’s a way to calculate any kind of moneyline wager:
Positive moneyline odds: Stake * (Odds /100) = Your winnings
Negative moneyline odds: Stake / (Odds / 100) = Your winnings
Make sure to screenshot the equation so you have it to hand when placing your next Overwatch bet.

Learning the Overwatch meta
You can play Overwatch in many different ways due to the range of maps, game modes, and heroes. More so, the developers, Activision Blizzard, often buff and nerf heroes in order to balance the game. Consequently, the meta shifts substantially on a regular basis to make way for new styles of play. The most iconic metas so far have been Deathball, Triple Tank, Dive and GOATS, with some metas coming in and out of rotation often because of balance changes. These constant changes to the play style makes it an essential component to consider when placing Overwatch bets as it impacts competitive matches and team performance which will, in turn, affect your odds and wager outcome.
An efficient way to keep up to date with Overwatch meta changes is through Youtube. Channels such as Your Overwatch, Stylosa, and PlayOverwatch are great sources as they explain not only the changes that come from each patch, but also how those patches will affect competitive play. We’d also recommend you keeping an eye out for the official patch notes as this is the official source for balance updates, going into detail about what has been changed.
Learn about a few Overwatch League teams
Researching the Overwatch League and Overwatch betting tips can be very overwhelming as there are plenty of contradictory opinions about the teams and how you should bet. This is why we strongly suggest focusing on a few specific teams and building your knowledge on how those teams perform throughout each season.
Once you’ve picked a select few teams to support and place your bets on, make sure you watch their previous matches and stay updated on any roster changes during the off season. The basics of Overwatch
There’s no denying it, Overwatch is a multifaceted game and quite unlike any other first person shooters out there. The range of play styles, heroes, and game modes means a basic understanding of the game is pretty essential.
Let’s take a quick look at the main things you need to know about Overwatch.
Hero types and roles
Overwatch is a multiplayer (6v) team-based first-person shooter where two teams have to either defend or attack. There are 32 playable heroes in Overwatch and each hero is classified under one of three roles: Tank, Damage, or Support.
Tank heroes: D.Va, Orisa, Reinhardt, Roadhog, Sigma, Winstron, Wrecking Ball, and Zarya.
Damage heroes: Ashe, Bastion, Doomfist, Echo, Genji, Hanzo, Junkrat, McCree, Pharah, Reaper, Soldier: 76, Sombra, Symmetra, Torbjörn, Tracer, and Widowmaker.
Support Heroes: Ana, Baptiste, Brigitte, Lúcio, Mercy, Moira, and Zenyatta.
Each game is limited to two tanks, two damage, and two support heroes and they must work together either attack the enemy objective or defend their own. In a ranked game and in the Overwatch League, the team who has successfully completed their objective wins the match and in the case of a draw, there is an extra round to determine the winner.
When loading into a game of Overwatch, you will be placed on a map and will have to complete one of these four game modes: Assault, Control, Escort, and Hybrid. Each game mode requires a different strategy and you need to understand what is needed to complete these objectives in order to win.
Assault: This game mode will either position your team in an attacking or defending role. Depending on which role your team is assigned, you will either have to attack the enemy’s objective or defend your objective respectively.
Control: On control maps, both team attack one non-assigned objective in a best-of-three set of rounds. Both teams can lose and regain the objective throughout each round, but the winner of the round will only be crowned to the team that gets the objective to 100%.
Escort: An escort map involves a payload that must be delivered to each checkpoint within a specific time frame. There are three checkpoints in total and the team with the most checkpoints/distance on their payload wins the match. The attacking team needs to be within close proximity to the payload in order to move it and the defending team must attempt to halt its progress by contesting it.
Hybrid: Hybrid is a combination of the Assault and Escort game mode. Firstly, the attacking team has to successfully claim a control point like you would if you were playing an Assault map. After the team has taken the point, they must then escort the payload to each checkpoint in time. For Hybrid maps, heroes are typically switched once the objective is secured as the game mode requires flexibility and different heroes when escorting the payload.
