With a talent pool as deep as theirs combined with the work ethic to succeed, the LPL will be fighting tooth-and-nail to be called the best region in the world once more.
Due to the expansive following that League of Legends has in China, Riot Games gave them the opportunity to field seventeen teams for their regional league. This means that due to the best-of-three tourney format, they can only have one single round robin across the entire split.
After the regular season, only the Top 10 are qualified into the playoffs with two phases held in best-of-five matches. In Phase 1, teams are seeded into a King of the Hill single-elimination bracket. Meanwhile, the second phase features a double-elimination bracket. This makes the LPL one of the toughest leagues to compete in with so many potential best-of series to run through to become the split champion.
The sole winner of the Playoffs qualifies as the region’s first seed at Worlds. The second seed is decided by the team that has the most championship points at the end of the season. Just like in Korea, the third and fourth seeds are to be determined in the Regional Finals.
When the LPL began in 2013, the regional league only had eight (8) competing teams. It would only be in 2015 that the league would expand its franchise to 12 teams divided into East and West regions until 2018. Then in 2019, the league was once again expanded to include 16 teams in total. Truly, the LPL is the model league that esports franchises from countries across the world want to replicate.
In late 2021, the only change to the region’s roster of teams was Victory Five completing their merger with Ninjas in Pyjamas, marking the Swedish organisation’s return to LoL Esports after three years.

As of now, the LPL hasn’t announced the exact dates for the 2023 summer split. However, if yearly schedules are to be followed, expect the season to start around June. The LPL Summer playoffs are set to begin shortly after the regular split in August and the regional finals to determine the region’s last Worlds representative in early September.
The league’s games are, by default, held offline in the Hongqiao World IE Hub in Shanghai, China. However, due to the large player base that China has, the LPL naturally has a lot of viewers and spectators ready to support their teams in their own stadiums. As such, teams like LGD Gaming and JD Gaming have their own home venues where they can play in much like traditional sports stadiums.
With a tournament as renowned as the LPL, winning the seventeen-team regional league would mean prestige and honour for the Summer champion. But aside from that, the champions receive ¥2,000,000 or around $15,000 USD in prizing. Furthermore, the champion becomes the first seed representative of the LPL to Worlds 2022 with the runners-up receiving equivalent championship points for their placing.
Although there are an overwhelming number of teams competing in the LPL, in the end, only four can make it out and qualify for Worlds.
JDG are coming into summer season still as the heavy favourites after dominating in the spring split with a 3-1 record against BLG in the finals. With Ruler and Knight having joined the team, JDG have turned into the LPL superteam to rule them all. These talented carries have taken the burden off Kanavi and allowed him to play more freely as one of the best junglers in the league.
Even before they have qualified for Worlds, JDG is already being touted as one of the favourites to hoist the Summoner’s Cup in this year’s Worlds. However, one thing to look out for this summer is how JDG will adapt to meta changes from the mid-season update. Because for the past season, the bot-centric meta has been very favourable for the spring champions with a marksman like Ruler in their back pocket.
