Damwon Gaming KIA was formed on May 28, 2017, by a computer company called Damwon. They bought the Challengers Korea team Mirage Gaming. This is why the team is called Damwon.
It was approaching the end of 2020 when South Korean car manufacturer Kia decided to make a sponsorship deal with then League of Legends world champions Damwon Gaming, also from South Korea.
Damwon announced they would rebrand to ‘DWG KIA’ ahead of LCK 2021. In this rebrand, Damwon esports also changed their logo to incorporate the Kia name and bring the symbol into the modern era, with the old logo looking quite dull. However, not everyone loved the new logo.

Damwon said they hoped Kia’s international appeal would help them grow. “The fact our new sponsorship partner already has a track record of reaching out to international fans… should fill DWG fans with excitement.”
Kia also sponsors the League of Legends European Championship but this deal with Damwon is the first time Kia has dealt with an individual esports organization. DWG KIA are the fifth team in the League of Legends Championship Korea to rebrand, so, if you’re ever struggling to find an esports organization online, there’s a good chance it has rebranded and changed its name!

Overall, DWG KIA have won about $1.3 million competing in League of Legends esports. In the last year-and-a-half, they have conquered more or less everything in their way and won the biggest titles available, such as the LCK Summer 2020, LoL 2020 World Championship, the KeSPA Cup 2020, LCK Spring 2021 and the LCK Summer 2021. The only thing they missed out on was winning the Mid-Season Invitational 2021, in which they came second.

Let’s face it, VALORANT esports isn’t yet at the level of LoL esports so the prize pools don’t quite match. Even in the international VALORANT 2021 Champions Tour (VCT), the prize pool was a relatively modest $400,000.

The current DK Rainbow Six team was formed in 2021, so they’re still on a learning curve. One of DK R6’s proudest victories so far was winning the R6 Korean Open in summer 2021. Otherwise, the team have won about $79,817 in prize money, and they seem to have a bright future ahead.
DK R6 have also won the APAC League 2021 Playoffs – Stage 2 with a prize of $5,000 and they came 5-8th in the Six Mexico Major 2021 for a $20,000 payout.

DWG KIA PUBG, created around August 2019, is probably the second most successful DK team, after their LoL roster. DK PUBG have won two A-tier competitions, including Emperor Penguin Champion Season 4 and Predator League 2020/21: Asia.
