Quarter-finals | EU LCS Spring Playoffs 2018

The teams trembled, were full of hope and celebrated, were devastated and cried tears of joy and bitterness – but now the regular part of the LCS Season 2018 lies behind us and the playoff games of the Spring Split starting with the quarterfinal matches next week will cause another firework of emotions on Summoner's Rift. A good one-time strategy is no longer a guarantee of victory, the best-of-5 format requires adaptability, tactical variety and stamina from all challengers. While so far only the Fnatic team could earn a spot for the semi-finals of the playoffs by BYE, big names like G2 Esports, Splyce or Team Vitality are still fighting for the coveted spots at the top. After an exciting Spring Split which could hardly be surpassed in tension, the signs look like G2 Esports will probably not be able to defend their Summer Split crown if they don't improve their play style rapidly. As every year the best teams of each Western LoL league will be able to represent their region at the 2018 Mid-Season Invitational Tournament and compete against international champions on Summoner's Rift. The first quarterfinal of the EU LCS Spring Split 2018 will start on March 23rd at 18:00 CET, don't miss turning in for these exciting best-of-5 duels.

EU LCS 2018 Week 1 Vitality vs H2k

Quarterfinals #2: Team Logo Vitality EU LCS 2018 small Vitality vs. H2K Gaming Team Logo H2K Gaming EU LCS 2018 small

Start Time: March 24th, 08:00 AM PDT/ 11:00 AM EDT/ 17:00 CET

For a long time it looked as if Team Vitality would secure themselves an assured BYE for the quarter-finals and a direct seed into the semi-finals but the second half of the regular Spring Split 2018 brought the challengers back to the bare ground. After the team of successful coach YamatoCannon dominated the first half of the season they collected defeat after defeat in the second part and only in the last few weeks the team could slowly recover from this negative series. Fortunately, right now is just the right time to get back on track – the best-of-5 format of the quarter-finals leaves plenty of room for creativity and adaptability. One of the top performers in Team Vitality is certainly Midlaner Jiizuke, his aggressive playing style combined with his top-class mechanical skills and the will to sacrifice up for his team make Team Vitality always a dangerous opponent. Jungler Gilius' personal season resembled a roller coaster ride, occasionally he was praised as perhaps the best LCS jungler but in other weeks he lost more smite duels than Faker has won Championship titles. Toplaner Cabochard will also be responsible for the team's success, the French superstar is more comfortable in this carry-oriented meta game. In general Team Vitality is a very emotional team, the flow of the first match can already decide the result of the whole series.

After a shaky split the H2K-Gaming team managed to qualify for the final phase of the Spring Season 2018. Caedrel and Santorin were definitely the sufferers in the H2K team but only after Shook and Selfie joined the team, the challengers were able to slowly work their way up from the shallows of the EU LCS table. Especially the strategic decisions of the team in the midgame with aggressive plays of Jungler Shook let them jump on the success course again. While it's certainly not enough for top teams like Fnatic and G2 Esports to compete in a best-of-5 duel the H2K gaming team can certainly become dangerous for the rest of the European LCS.

Prediction: If you take a look at the betting odds the H2K gaming team should not stand any chances. Team Vitality's individual players also look stronger on paper but Jiizuke and Co have only recently showed up again on Summoner's Rift. This match will probably be more exciting than expected but I expect a 3-1 victory for Team Vitality.

EU LCS 2018 Spring Playoffs - Quarterfinal Splyce vs Roccat

Quarterfinals #1: Team Logo SPY EU LCS 2018 small Splyce vs. ROCCAT Team Logo ROCCAT EU LCS 2018 small

Start Time: March 23rd , 09:00 AM PDT/ 12:00 PM EDT/ 18:00 CET

Splyce against Roccat see each other again in the quarter-finals. In week 2 Roccat ensured his Victory, although Splyce was the current favourite. Whereas week 7 offered Splyce its chance for revenge. These games offer a lot of analysis potential, as both teams move obviously very carefully into the meta-phase. In the second game (and after patch updates) it was only a tactical back and forth in the first 15 minutes! Splyce then secured “First-Blood” in minute 16 and their potential to stall against a potential “Snowball” is also interesting, as both of them always manage to get “back, or even ahead” through individual moves troughout the games.

Roccat's performance had a small break-in to the middle of the split and everyone feared the blue rocket ran out of fuel, but with ROC-Memento and a well-rehearsed bot lane the team is definitely not badly positioned. The Split Playoffs starts Roccat with 10L- 8W.

Splyce has continuously shown good performances and lost some games just due to “unlucky”. Also Splyce has a good backup potential with SPY-Xerxe from the Jungle, but in my eyes shows a better feeling for overall meta-play. Splyce starts the playoffs (+1Tie-Breaker) with 8L – 11W

Prediction: The Spring Playoff format provides for a best-of-5, so both teams will probably try to choose a risky “matchup” in the first game and in the following games, we will see the usual (kill-poor) tactics again. The experts and analysts of our betting providers clearly prefer the Splyce team to the Roccat team, but experience shows that predictions for the first best-of-5 of this split are more difficult to classify. I expect Splyce to win 3-2.
