Mortal Kombat is an arcade-style fighting game consisting of 11 main titles, with 13 more games sharing the name in different genres. The first Mortal Kombat game came out in 1992. The first Mortal Kombat games were arcade games that were later popularized on SNES and Sega Genesis. Due to the gore, the game was controversial at the time. While Sega allowed players to see blood, this was coloured green in the SNES version, to make the game more acceptable for the younger audiences.
Mortal Kombat 4 was the first of the franchise to use 3D computer graphics, coming out to consoles such as the PS1. Now, with Mortal Kombat 11, the game has stayed true to its origins, with a much more modern gameplay and graphics.
The Mortal Kombat franchise is known for its gore and violence – as well as for the famous ‘’finish him’’ voice line, which would accompany each character's finishing move. This mechanic would become one of the main highlights of the series – after all, who doesn’t love ripping out their opponent’s spine?

Clad in yellow garments similar to that of Sub-Zero, Scorpion wields your typical ninja arsenal, such as kunai.
Clad in purple armour – which is quite revealing – Mileena is the clone of Kitana, sharing her deformed mouth. A ninja warrior, Mileena wields Soaring Sais, which are enveloped by a purple aura. One of her iconic finishers is the Leaping Neckbite, which involves her attacking her opponent from the air and clawing away at their face and neck – in an attempt to eat them.
Debuting in Mortal Kombat 2 in 1993, Shao Kahn is clad in spiked armour and wields the Wrath Hammer, a large warhammer. Considered to be one of the strongest MK characters, he wields green energy and has the ability to absorb the souls of his opponents. He is also the self-proclaimed ruler of the Outworld. granting himself the title of Emperor.
Considered the female Sub-Zero, Frost wields the power of ice manipulation. She was Sub-Zero’s apprentice, until her master made peace with Scorpion, after which she attempted to defeat him. Although she failed, she holds a grudge. She is clad in a cyberized blue, white and gold armour, featuring a face mask.
A wannabe lizard, Reptile is clad in scale-like ninja armour and a face mask in the form of a reptile. He possesses the ability to become invisible, as well as spit acid and the usage of homing energy. According to lore, he is a reptile-human hybrid.
The daughter of two prominent MK characters, Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, she possesses superhuman strength and is an expert martial artist. She can also use shadow energy. Clad in simple armor, she is the head of the Earthrealm special forces task team.
Considered the best martial artist in Mortal Kombat, he is one of the few original characters still in the game, and has acted as the main character in the movie adaptations of MK. Clad in simple black pants, his body is covered in tattoos. He can also throw fireballs.
Whilst human at first, Raiden is now considered the Thunder God, acting as the protector of the Earthrealm. Although his iconic straw hat is far from intimidating, Raiden can throw lightning, move at the speed of lightning, as well as teleport and shock his opponents.
A 10,000-year-old princess of Edenia, she retains a forever youthful appearance. She is the stepdaughter of Shao Kahn, and Liu Kang’s romantic partner. She is one of the leaders of the Netherrealm, clad in a blue one piece, with a blue face mask. Whilst her steel fans are quite deadly, her main talents lay in hand-to-hand combat.
While the esports scene for Mortal Kombat is smaller than that of its competitors, there are still quite a few competitions that are held on a regular basis.

Of course, there are plenty of smaller tournaments and LAN tournaments usually with prize pools up to $4,000. As well as that, there are many player-hosted tournaments, featuring smaller prizes such as Steam and Amazon gift cards. These are less competitive, and serve more as a community bonding experience.
