What Is the LFL?

The Ligue Française de League of Legends (LFL), known as the League of Legends French League, is France’s national esports league run by Riot Games and Webedia. First established in 2019, the LFL is one of the LEC’s biggest amateur leagues amongst its 13 European Regional Leagues (ERL). As such, the LFL is a place where Europe’s biggest stars are scouted from.

The LFL has splits in spring and summer, where each season slots into the EMEA Masters, Europe’s greatest amateur league tournament. The French league is an accredited ERL with ten competing teams. Adam, Cabochard, Rekkles, and Crownshot,  are a few of the recognisable names who have played in the league from the LEC.

This year, the LoL tournament LFL 2023 Summer will take place from June 1st. In the LFL 2022 Summer, LDLC OL came in first position with Team BDS Academy and Vitality.Bee coming in second and third position respectively. Team LDLC OL has retained their position as the most competitive French team seeing that they also won the LFL 2023 Spring. LDLC OL is also among the teams that will be participating in the LFL LOL 2023.

History of the LFL

The LFL started back in 2018 as the Open Tour France, which saw teams compete across seven tournaments throughout France. The league was meant to be a training ground for France’s up-and-coming talent, where they could compete and qualify for the European Masters.

Then, in 2019, Riot Games and global media-tech company, Webedia, decided to come together to start the LFL. Its inaugural season had eight competing teams that saw academy rosters from European teams like Misfits and Team Vitality. Ever since, the league has grown, now having ten competing teams, and has even had teams like LDLC OL take home the EU Masters championship.

League of Legends has always had a huge following in France. Back in the day, the region hosted the World Championship’s Group Stage in 2015 and Grand Finals in 2019. So, it is no wonder that its national esports league is one of Europe’s best and most followed among the countries in the region.

Taking a look at the region’s history, veteran legends like sOAZ, Yell0wStaR, and Rekkles, who brought Europe to stardom, all come from France. And in the present day, six out of the 50 players (around 12%) of the LEC’s rosters are French. French talents like Sheo, Vetheo, and Exacick could very well be Europe’s future stars.

How To Start Betting on the LFL

The LFL is well-known across Europe as a hotbed for the region’s rising talents. So, if you want to be a step ahead on getting to know the next generation’s pros, it can be good to follow the LFL. Here is how you can start LFL LoL betting on the French league:

  1. Choose a reputable and licensed bookmaker. To make it easier for you, you can pick from one of our recommended betting operators.
  2. Sign up for an account and provide the necessary documents to verify your account. To verify your identity you might be required to upload a copy of your driving license. On the other hand, a copy of any utility bill will be necessary in verifying your address.
  3. Add a payment method, then fund your account, taking advantage of whatever promotions are available. However, always read the conditions for these promotions.
  4. Navigate to the sportsbook for esports games and choose the LFL among the League of Legends tournaments to bet on.
  5. Choose a betting market that you are comfortable with.
  6. Place your bets and keep track of their outcomes.

What Betting Markets Can I Wager on in the LFL?

There are a number of LFL betting markets you can wager on:

Outright Winner

Outright winner — or tournament winner — is a market where you bet on the team you think will win the LFL at the end of the split. Bets for this market are available before the tournament starts, with odds drastically changing as the split continues.

Moneyline Betting

Simply put, you only have to predict which team will win a match in moneyline betting. Moneylines are among the most popular bets you can place in esports because of their simplicity. But because of this, turning a profit through moneylines becomes harder over the long term because of lower odds.

However, if you do your research, you can win big in LFL betting by predicting upsets. Especially in an amateur league like the LFL, underdogs can easily turn the tide on any given day.

Total Betting

Total betting or over/under betting is a type of betting market where you predict whether a chosen stat in-game will go over or under a number predetermined by the bookie. In the major esports leagues, this can refer to total maps played, dragons or towers taken, and game duration.

In the LFL, this simply refers to total kills odd/even. This makes every kill in the game matter for deciding this type of bet. Perhaps in the playoffs or future seasons, the LFL will see more total betting markets made available.

Prop Betting

Proposition betting (prop betting) is a market where you can bet on specific outcomes or moments in a game. These can include team to secure first blood, destroy first tower, or slay the first Baron. Despite being straightforward, these bets rely on a deep knowledge of the teams’ playstyles as it heavily influences how their games play out on the Rift.

Also, do note that the outcome of these prop bets may or may not decide the final outcome of the match. For example, a team that takes first tower is not necessarily guaranteed to win a game.

Handicap Betting

Handicap betting is when a team is given an advantage or disadvantage to balance the odds between teams who seem to have a mismatched matchup. In League of Legends, this handicap is in the form maps or kills added or deducted to a match’s result.

Although not yet available in the regular season, expect to see this betting market be made available in the playoffs where best-of-three and best-of-five series come to play

As an example, a +1.5-handicap bet in a best-of-three series means that your team only needs to win one game to win your bet. On the other hand, a -1.5-map handicap means that your team needs to win two straight games to win your bet. This applies to kill handicaps in the same way.

Betting Tips for the LFL in 2023

Your account is finally loaded up and you have your eyes set on what markets to bet on. But before anything, you should always start by doing in-depth research on the teams and players that you are going to be betting on.

You can analyse and start researching esports teams by looking into player statistics, their past form, and even solo queue record. Since the LFL is an ERL, coverage on the league is going to be minimal. Therefore, it is even more important to take advantage of this lack of information about players and teams by doing your own independent research.

Keep a keen eye on France’s amateur League of Legends community by watching players’ performances in the region’s minor leagues, such as the LFL Division 2 or the Mastercard Nexus Tour.

From there, you can then start comparing odds offered by different operators. In betting, the name of the game is always on value. Different bookmakers offer different odds based on their own expert opinion. As such, if you can find teams who can outperform their odds, it will be easier to make money while betting on the LFL.

Last but not the least, you need to have a concrete strategy when placing your bets. Manage your bankroll by setting spending limits on how much you are willing to lose. Never chase your losses and understand that betting inherently has its risks. In amateur leagues like the LFL, games and matches can be very volatile; this requires you as a bettor to be more responsible in your betting.

Tournament Format

In each split, the LFL’s ten competing teams face off in a standard double round robin played out in best-of-one matches. This means each of the teams will be playing a total of 18 matches. From then on, the top six teams will qualify for the playoffs, with the top two teams receiving a place in Round 2.

In the playoffs, all matches become best-of-five, with the format being double elimination. The top three teams in both spring and summer get to represent France in the EMEA Masters. Meanwhile, the bottom two teams with the lowest championship points will have their league slots contested in the upcoming promotion tournament held at the end of the year.

Schedule

The LFL will be following the same schedule and format as it did in past years. That being said, the Summer Split will take place from June 1st to August 18th to make way for the EMEA Masters Summer season later on in the year. Then, to end the league’s fifth season, the LFL will be holding the Coupe de France 2023 and the LFL’s Up & Down promotion tournament. Below is the expected LFL 2023 schedule;

  • June 1st to July 28th, 2023 – Group Stage
  • August 13th to August 18th, 2023 – Playoffs

LFL Prize Pool

Despite being an ERL, the LFL has the viewership and following of an established region, like the PCS or the VCS. However, its prize pool as an amateur league sets it behind the competition at €20,000. For the playoffs teams, this means getting a cut from the prize pool as follows:

  • First place: €8,000
  • Second place: €5,000
  • Third place: €3,000
  • Fourth place: €2,000
  • Fifth place: €1,000
  • Sixth place: €1,000

As we mentioned, the top three teams get to qualify for the EMEA Masters Summer 2023, which will kick off towards the end of August till September. There, they stand a chance to take home the lion’s share of the regional tournament’s even bigger €150,000 prize pool. Furthermore, top performing players in the league are more than likely to be scouted for the LEC in the next season.

Participating Teams

Similar to the LFL Summer 2022, the LFL LoL 2023 will feature 10 teams. These include the renowned LDLC OL, Vitality.Bee and Team GO. Below is a full list of the LFL teams 2023:

  • LDLC OL
  • AEGIS
  • Team GO
  • Vitality.Bee
  • Solary
