Having been growing for years, the esports ecosystem now features more than 40 games where teams and players compete against each other. Most major tournaments feature over $500,000 in prize pool money, so it’s safe to say that esports is currently in a healthy place. And today, we’ll be taking a look at CoD: Warzone esports, one of the newer esports games.

What Is CoD: Warzone?

CoD: Warzone is a Call of Duty game that was released in 2020 by Activision. It’s a battle royale FPS game that features well-known CoD mechanics and newer ones that are part of the battle royale experience.

On release, the game was relatively highly praised and the active player counts have reached some impressive levels. For reference, 100 million active players were playing the game in April 2021 – a huge number that other battle royale esports games have struggled to reach.

However, this can also be attributed to the rise of the battle royale game genre; while there were certain titles of this genre in the past, none had such an impact as Fortnite. Then PUBG and Apex Legends came along, and eventually, Warzone entered the fray.

Activision also released a sequel to Warzone, titled ‘Warzone 2.0’ on the 16th of November 2022, but the game wasn’t as well-received as its predecessor. The company is also currently developing a mobile version of Warzone to complete its free battle royale trifecta of games.

Warzone Basics Explained

The first piece of info and one of the major differences between Warzone and other battle royale games is that it supports up to 150 players in the Battle Royale game mode. There have evn been certain limited-time game modes that have supported up to 200 players!

Otherwise, this game mode is similar to how other battle royale games have done it, with the shrinking map and jumping out of a plane at the beginning of the match. The players also start without equipment that they need to find around the map.

There is a bigger focus on using vehicles during matches and there are no restrictions to parachuting. This makes gameplay a bit more tactical and engaging, which is one of the reasons Warzone esports has become so popular.

Another major difference that Warzone utilises efficiently is character death – or rather, the lack thereof. When a player is ‘killed’, they are first downed, and if not revived, sent to the ‘Gulag’, where they fight one-on-one with another downed player.

In Warzone 2, the Gulag has changed to introduce a 2v2 duel. Both teams are given the same weapons and the winning duo will respawn on the map. This only works for the player’s first death; if they die a second time, they are eliminated from the match instead of being sent there.

There are also in-game events that impact the match in various ways, including Fire Sale, Jailbreak, Restock, and Supply Chopper.

  • Fire Sale – This event discounts all items in Buy Stations up to 80%.
  • Jailbreak – This event frees all players from the Gulag and brings them back to the match.
  • Restock – This event fills up all the loot boxes which were already opened.
  • Supply Chopper – This event spawns a helicopter with loot that the players can access by shooting the helicopter down.

There are a couple of other game modes that are usually time-limited and differ from the main Battle Royale mode in a couple of ways.

In any case, the gameplay is unique enough to make CoD: Warzone stand out from the rest of the battle royale games but similar enough to other battle royale titles so players can easily jump into the game without having to learn the gameplay.

Comparing Warzone To Other Battle Royales

When we take a look at CoD: Warzone as a whole, we can see a lot of similarities to other battle royale titles. However, there are characteristics that make it unique.

On the other hand, Warzone tournaments aren’t quite as prestigious or as large as Fortnite’s, Apex Legend’s, and PUBG’s. The reason for this might be battle royale oversaturation on the market. It might also be because CoD: Warzone esports teams aren’t as numerous as in other esports games.

Whatever the case, Warzone is still a good game with a loyal fanbase and following.

Let's take a look at some of the most popular Warzone esports tournaments:

Tournament NamePrize PoolTeamsWinners

BoomTV x TimTheTatman $150K Kill Race$150,0008Fifakill, Jukeyz
HusKerrs Howl: Grand Finals$150,0003Biffle, SuperEvan

As you can see, Warzone’s esports tournaments aren’t quite on the level as the tournaments of other battle royale games, but they’re still entertaining enough to bring in sizeable viewership numbers. This title is also relatively popular with people who are interested in esports betting, but more on that later.

Where Can You Bet on CoD: Warzone Esports?

You’ve got a couple of great options when it comes to CoD: Warzone esports betting. 1xBet and Betway are both some of the best bookies on the market, but you could also try your hand with Thunderpick.

The odds these esports bookies offer are pretty good, especially seeing how Warzone is one of the rarer betting options. Still, as it’s the 19th most popular esports game, it is to be expected that certain bookies do actually offer betting on the game.

How To Join Warzone Esports Tournaments

Most Warzone players are casuals who just want to enjoy the game for what it is or have a few friends join them, but there are also those who want to try their hand playing in esports tournaments.

Well, the good news is that there are a couple of websites and organisations that host these tournaments. In most cases, joining a tournament is easy, but you may have to pay a small entry fee to participate (ie. $5). The most common websites that host Warzone esports tournaments are CheckMateGaming, Game.TV, and ZLeague.

Summary

In the end, while it’s evident that Warzone isn’t on the same level as the biggest battle royale title, it’s still a decent game with a good following and the occasional esports tournament. Activision has taken the step of releasing the sequel to the first game, but it hasn’t been so well received.

Nonetheless, the legacy of Warzone remains, and the game is still active, albeit having fewer players on a daily level than before. If you’re interested in betting on CoD: Warzone, you’ll be able to find tournaments and matches to bet on thanks to the dedication of the bookies we mentioned at the beginning of this article.

FAQ

Warzone Esports FAQs

There are around 53 million average monthly players; a number that hasn’t changed much in the past six months or so. This proves that the game is still highly popular, but people seem to prefer playing it to watching esports tournaments. The peak number of daily players in the last 30 days is 3.5 million, which is pretty impressive.

Call of Duty Warzone was released on the 10th of March, 2020. The sequel to CoD: Warzone, Warzone 2 was released on the 16th of November 2022.

CoD: Warzone is a large game. It requires 105GB of free disk space and an additional 80-100GB to install the game, so around 180GB of total disk space.

The biggest Warzone esports tournament was the Twitch Rivals: Doritos Bowl event, with 48 participating teams and $230,500 in prize pool money.

Warzone 2.0 is less popular than Warzone, having an estimated 250,000-430,000 concurrent active daily players. Compare that with around two million active daily players in the original Warzone and it’s evident that the fans prefer the original.
