Super Smash Bros, no matter which version we’re talking about, is a generational hit! It’s every fighter gamer’s dream, nicely poised with numerous well-known characters and game mechanics that will never go out of favour. The game’s esports section is quite lively too, though it still can’t go head-to-head with some of the industry’s finest. The same goes for Super Smash Bros betting opportunities too. They do exist, but they’re not as plentiful as one might imagine.

What is Super Smash Bros?

For those of you who’ve been living under a rock for the last twenty years or so, Super Smash Bros is a highly popular fighting game series created by Nintendo. The first Super Smash Bros game was released back in January 1999, and numerous other releases came out in the following years.

The newest one, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, was launched in 2018 but still has a very active community. We’re talking about a crossover fighting game featuring 89 playable fighters from a wide variety of games.

Super Smash Bros is the only game in which you can play as Super Mario and fight against the likes of Toon Link, Mega Man, and even Pac-Man. Crazy, huh?

SSB History

As mentioned earlier, the first-ever Super Smash Bros game was released back in January 1999. Super Smash Bros was the name and it was released for Nintendo 64. Believe it or not, it sold over a million copies just in Japan, featuring twelve fighters and a whole lot of fun fighting action.

The second iteration, Super Smash Bros Melee, was released in late 2001 (mid-2022 in Europe) and received exceptional reviews. It was the turning point for the franchise, with everyone and their grandmother familiar with Melee’s gameplay and/or characters.

Super Smash Bros Brawl came out in early 2008 and also had a solid lifespan with lots of hardcore fans from all across the globe. Super Smash Bros 4 is worth mentioning too. It was released in 2014 but got nowhere near as much popularity as Super Smash Bros Ultimate which was released in 2018.

Even to this day, Super Smash Bros Ultimate has massive traction and is one of the most beloved fighting games in general, not just on Nintendo Switch. Thanks to a plethora of available fighters, numerous game setups, and a healthy competitive community, Super Smash Bros Ultimate still has a few years of life left, that’s for sure!

Which Players Have Earned the Most in Smash Esports?

Even though Super Smash Bros games aren’t as lucrative as the likes of CSGO, Dota 2, and League of Legends, being good at them still pays off. It pays off pretty well, I’ll dare to add! Here’s a list of the top ten Super Smash Bros Ultimate professional players along with their overall earnings in this specific game.

Player SSBU Earnings Country
MKLEO $174,655 Mexico
Tweek $91,073 USA
Marss $74,349 USA
Glutonny $71,713 France
Dabuz $65,034 USA
Sparg0 $63,073 Mexico
Samsora $44,377 USA
Light $41,902 USA
Cosmos $41,414 USA
Scend $35,606 USA

For those of you who aren’t aware, Super Smash Bros Ultimate features 89 playable fighters. The list of the most popular ones can greatly depend on the type of setups we’re talking about. Couch multiplayer sessions will prefer one set of fighters, internet cafe tournaments will prefer another… while professional players will prefer a totally different batch.

According to EventHubs, here are the ten most popular Super Smash Bros Ultimate characters:

  • Cloud
  • Terry
  • Bayonetta
  • Joke
  • Ganondorf
  • Snake
  • Young Link
  • Inkling
  • Marth
  • Roy

Most Common Types of Super Smash Bros Betting Options

Now that you know more about the game itself as well as some of its most popular characters, let’s see what sort of betting bonuses and opportunities await you during the biggest SSB events. Hint – there’s not a lot of variety… especially in the SSB bonus department… which is why we’ll be focusing solely on the betting options:

Match Winners

The most basic bet available! Match winners are insanely straightforward. Just select the player you believe will win the match and if they do, your bet will go through. Depending on the state of affairs in the event you’re thinking of betting on, the odds will vary from relatively low to mediocre at best. This is Super Smash Bros betting lines we’re talking about, so don’t expect crazy value bets here.

Outright Winners

Match winners are only taking one single match into consideration. What about outright winners, then? Well, instead of a single match, these bets are taking into consideration the outcome of the entire event. So yeah, long story short, outright winner bets allow you to place bets on the tournament winner.

Typically, these bets offer a lot higher odds and generally superior value to their match winner counterparts. If you’re into that sort of stuff and you don’t mind waiting a long time to see the results of your bets, then outrights ought to be right up your alley.

Spreads

Even though match winners and outrights are by far the most popular Super Smash Bros bets, you will be able to find additional options too. As you can see from the heading, we’re referring to spreads. What are they?

Well, basically, in best-of scenarios, spreads allow you to either bet on the favorite not to lose more than x maps by giving the underdog an artificial advantage, or bet on the underdog to win the game based on artificial advantage (f.e +1, +2, +3, etc).

Unfortunately, spreads are only available during the game’s biggest esports occasions, like the Super Smash Ultimate Summits and similar grandiose events.

Biggest Super Smash Bros Esports Events to Bet On

Even though, a couple of years ago, Super Smash Bros (all notable versions) had several important events in their competitive ecosystems, the number has fallen to just one massive event. EVO, Smash World Tour, and earlier iterations of Smash Summit managed to coexist for several years.

But, that’s not the case anymore. While newer tournaments are bound to pop up, as far as the grandest SSB occasions go, there are just two specimens worth mentioning – Super Smash Ultimate Summit and Smash World Tour!

Super Smash Ultimate Summit

This is by far the biggest and most recognized Super Smash Bros event out there. It’s based on the Ultimate version of the game, delivering exceptional high-profile action for several years already. Organized by Beyond The Summit, these events take place in the United States but have proper multilingual livestream coverage across the world.

The recently finished fourth iteration of Smash Ultimate Summit featured $157,800 in prize money and crowned Sparg0 as the winner. Light came in second, ProtoBanham came in third, and T1’s MkLeo came in fourth.

FAQ

SSB FAQ Section

Smash Ultimate Summits are the most popular and lucrative SBB events you can bet on. The 2022 Smash Ultimate Summit had just shy of $160,000 in total prize money. It was held in LA from 3rd to 7th March and amassed quite the audience. According to Esports Charts, the 2022 Smash Ultimate Summit had 112,406 peak viewers and over 43,000 viewers on average. There were lots of betting options for this event, which means the next iteration is a no-brainer for people interested in Super Smash Bros betting.

Unfortunately, you won’t find a lot of Super Smash Bros betting markets. Even during the biggest events, your options will be very limited. In other words, you’ll only have access to stuff like match winner, outright winner, and in best-case scenarios, spreads.

Playing Super Smash Bros Ultimate in co-op is simple. Just go into the play mode, find the icon (usually at the bottom of the screen) and select it to add the second player. You have to have the controller connected, though, and you need to press both L and R at the same time to join the match.

Here’s the fastest way to unlock all characters in Super Smash Bros Ultimate:

Create a versus match with a custom ruleset – set the match length to 1 minute and set the players’ stamina to the lowest value (10). This will result in just a single hit or two to finish the match. After finishing it, a new challenger will approach. After finishing that match, restart the game to reset its character unlock counter (10 minutes). Rinse and repeat!

Super Smash Bros is not as popular as other esports games like League of Legends, Dota 2, or CSGO, but still – that doesn’t mean it should be taken for granted. Even though it has a relatively small community, it is very active. They’re always there to support the game and enjoy high-tier gameplay on all SSB events.
