Immediately after rumors were confirmed, Overwatch league has become the hottest topic in the world of esports and beyond. Since the game is played by millions of players, the stakes are high, revenues could be even higher and it comes as no wonder why everyone is talking about it. Discussions on this topic don’t revolve around signings, money, and teams, but other things as well. These days, Overwatch league logo got all the attention, but not for good reasons after the league was accused of having a design similar to MLB logo. With the MLB upset, could anything will happen to Blizzard’s plans about releasing Overwatch League?
What really happened?
It all started when law firm Morrison/Lee published a blog post stating that Major League Baseball (MLB) is not happy with Overwatch league logo. What was the problem? They basically had a problem with Overwatch logo being similar to that of MLB. They explained that trademarks are published in the Official Gazette once they are approved. When new trademarks are revealed, other parties who have a problem with the logo can file a complaint within 30 days. If nobody complains during this time, the application is set to move to the next step of the registration process.
After the official Overwatch logo was published, it couldn’t proceed to the next stage because MLB found the design was way too similar to their own logo. One can’t help but wonder why MLB didn’t accuse NBA or some other leagues of the same thing or why these leagues weren’t bothered by Overwatch logo. The problem becomes even more confusing if you bear in mind that Overwatch league logo features different character than MLB’s (of course). Not only that, but Overwatch used black, white, and orange colors for the design while MLB’s logo features blue, white, and red.
Overwatch logo is safe
One day before the 30-day deadline, MLB sent a request seeking an extension of time to oppose the Overwatch league logo. They explained this request saying they need more time to investigate the claim and confer with counsel. The extension lasts about 90 days generally. During this time, the opposing side (in this case MLB) can work on the case to make it stronger and potentially win or they can reach a settlement with the other side (in this case Overwatch league).
The deadline was July 26, 2017, and no changes have been announced. Basically, this means Overwatch logo is safe because MLB took no action against the design. Both Overwatch and Major League Baseball either reached some sort of settlement or MLB decided to give up the case altogether. At this point, it is impossible to tell which one of these scenarios happened, but one thing is for sure – Overwatch logo will stay intact for now.
It is important to mention that Trademark office didn’t have any problems whatsoever with Overwatch league logo. The approval of the logo depends on the fact whether Trademark office will consider it confusing to the average consumer. The goal is to ensure that an average person won’t mistake a certain logo for something else. This didn’t happen with Overwatch logo which is why it was approved immediately until MLB came along and found a problem with it.
Every league has its own logo that people identify it with. Overwatch league logo caught itself in scandal after it has been reported that MLB finds it too similar to their own logo. Major League Baseball required an extension to work on the case but the deadline was a few days ago and no changes have been announced, which only means MLB won’t oppose Overwatch logo.
