One of the most popular (if not THE most popular) daily fantasy sports providers – DraftKings, has started with a beta program in Germany on 23rd March. Generally, DraftKings launch is not a surprise considering they announced this in late January. Everything was made true with them receiving the gambling license from Malta. Believe it nor not, only DraftKings and Oulala are fantasy-oriented sites to receive Malta gambling license. It allowed them to expand into Europe, bringing the joy of daily fantasy sports to everyone living here.
Even though the most important part of DraftKings for us is definitely eSports betting… Here is the full list of daily fantasy sports you can expect from the launch:
DraftKings launch – encouraging words from their CIO
Here is what J. Haas, Chief International Officer at DraftKings, had to say about this:
“Germany is known for its passionate sports fans and we are pleased to welcome them to daily fantasy sports… DraftKings gives everyone the chance to prove they are the best team manager in the world, when they are at the beer garden or on their couch at home. It’s the same fun fantasy sports experience players know and love, but without the season-long commitment.”
With the above words taken into consideration, it is noticeable that DraftKings have serious plans with the European market. After launching DraftKings UK back in 2016, they are now aiming to rapidly expand all over Europe where fantasy betting laws aren’t as strict as they are in the USA. Still, such rapid expansion plan could take its toll on the company. But despite that, who am I to judge their long-term plans.
“It’s much easier for us to cut through with our messaging for American sports fans, than it is for European football, because we’re not competing with hundreds of companies that are trying to reach those consumers.” – J. Haas, Interview for Legal Sports Report
DraftKing long term plans
Besides the DraftKings launch in Germany, they also plan on expanding in Malta too. They, of course, don’t have such a huge hardcore-betting population, but will still increase their numbers nevertheless. In addition to that, it’s only a matter of time before they expand to other EU countries as well. Many of them have loose laws regarding fantasy betting so there will most likely be no major issues. Unfortunately, if you live in Spain, Italy or France, I doubt you will be happy with the following info. Those 3 countries all have relatively high taxes and generally seem unprofitable for fantasy sports betting website. While that might change in the near future, for now, I’m sure DraftKings will focus on other countries.
