With the wildcard stage now behind us, the 16 teams going to TI5 Group Stage are now set. Out of the regional qualifiers to the tournament, it was the Chinese and the Southeast Asian qualifiers who managed to advance.
The Upper Bracket Semifinals saw the Korean-based MVP Phoenix take on America’s recently sponsored Team Archon in a tight 2-1 slugfest. Game 2 hung on the edge of a base race and Team Archon managed to pull through against an exposed throne facing the prospect of Mega Creeps against them. However, MVP Phoenix regained their composure and closed it out in the decisive game 3, dropping Team Archon to the Lower Bracket to face up with Vega Squadron.
The other Upper Bracket Semifinals saw China’s representative, CDEC Gaming, managed to cruise to the group stage, beating Vega Squadron 2-1 in the opening round and then sweeping MVP Phoenix 2-0 in the Upper Bracket finals to guarantee their qualification into TI5.
In the Lower Bracket Semi’s, the European qualifiers, Vega Squadron proved too much to handle for the North Americans, Team Archon, who got promptly swept and looked a little out of place; knocking them out of the tournament.
Full of confidence, Vega Squadron met up with MVP Phoenix to decide the final qualifier into the Group Stages. The Europeans carried their momentum to a solid game 1 win, looking very much the part of European Qualifier Champions. The deciding game of the series was the second game. A near hour-long back and forth grindfest from both teams, with both teams having the chance to win the game at different stages throughout, it proved to be MVP Phoenix who managed to throw enough bodies at the Vega Squadron Barracks and, with the help of a few Relocates, managed to finally secure Mega Creeps. Vega Squadron was forced to go all-in down mid lane with a Divine Rapier, but it wasn’t enough and the South East Asians managed to take it to an Ace match. In the final game of the Wildcard Series, the Koreans stuck with their Wisp-Bristleback combinations, and paired with a standout Shadowfiend performance from QO, they overwhelmed the Europeans, who saw their TI5 dreams come crumbling to a halt.
There was some great Dota played already, and no doubt the Group Stage is going to be even better!
