TI5 Day 3 pretty clearly defined where teams sit at this year’s International tournament. The best teams continued to prove that they are indeed the teams to beat; Team Secret, LGD Gaming, and Virtus Pro all had big days, securing their positions at the top of the standings. Pretenders struggled and fell off the map; Na’Vi continued to struggle, Newbee were unimpressive and only managed to pick up 1 point, and Invictus Gaming completely fell apart. The big surprise to date is CDEC Gaming topping Group B with 12 points and a 4-0-1 record.
The big 2 of Secret and LGD continued their dominance; after splitting their head-to-head series 1-1, they both went on to earn 2-0 sweeps in their next match, fortifying their position atop group A.EG had a mediocre day, but still sits pretty comfortably in second place of Group B. They are a team that routinely gets better as the tournament goes on, so there is plenty of time left for them to get into their groove. A semi-surprise contender who had a good day was Virtus Pro. They were in great form heading into the tournament, and they have rode that confidence to a top 4 seat in group B. A 2-0 sweep of MVP H6ix and a decent 1-1 split against a pretty strong VG team has to be considered a solid day for the Russians.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, a trio of former champions had awful days, signifying that their era, perhaps, is coming to an end. TI1 champions Natus Vincere continued to struggle, managing only a 1-1 split against Fnatic, before being convincingly swept 0-2 by LGD. They just have not been able to gain any traction at this year’s tournament, or all of 2015 for that matter. Their struggles and Secret’s success just shows the importance of Puppey and Kuroky. TI2 champions, Invictus Gaming, are also struggling mightily. They were swept by both Cloud 9 and even MVP Phoenix on day 3. It seems like the game might just be passing by the old school players of Dota 2. Even recent TI4 champions, Newbee, had a rough day 3. Though somewhat overlooked coming into the tournament, they had a decent start, making people wonder if they could recapture the magic that they had last year. But after a 1-1 split against Team Empire, they were handily defeated 0-2 by CDEC Gaming. We could very well be seeing a new champion this year.
