The Qualifiers for the Dota 2 Kiev Major 2017 are over and there have been surprising results along with not so much surprising ones. Here’s how the qualifiers spots are distributed: 2 spots for each region: China, SEA, Europe and Americas. Europe is divided into Europe and the CIS-Region, Americas is divided in North America and South America. The 8 teams that booked their ticket to the Kiev Major by winning the qualifiers are now joining the 8 invited Dota 2 teams. So in total 16 teams are qualified for the Group Stage of the Major tournament in Kiev.
Region Americas – North America
In North America there were three favorites to win the Qualifiers: Team NP, compLexity Gaming and Team Freedom. Especially Team NP started out very strong in the round robin phase (everyone plays everyone) and winning every game. But this is only half of the story: Team NP managed to win their first Bo3 in the playoffs against Team Freedom, but had an early exit after losing 2 series in a row. Team Freedom experienced the same fate as they lost against surprise team Team Onyx. Team Onyx managed to get into the finale against compLexity Gaming. After a very exciting Bo3, Team Onyx beat compLexity and thus get a spot at the Dota 2 Kiev Major.

Region Americas – South America
The South American Qualifiers were very entertaining, so it happened that three teams had the exact same record in the round robin phase: Not Today, SG e-sports, Infamous went 8-1. In the playoffs Infamous were the first to exit the qualifiers when losing to Midas Club Elite, who went on to lose against SG e-sports. The finale was SG e-sports and Not Today. SG e-sports managed to edge out the win and thus received a spot in the Kiev Major as their first big Valve event.

Region Europe – Europe
Europe is one of the most competitive regions in Dota 2 and so the Qualifiers were hard fought. Team Secret was the dominant team in the round robin phase and had 8 wins to 1 loss, behind them followed B)ears with 7-2 and Ninja in Pyjamas and Alliance with 6-3 each. The playoffs tell an interesting tale: no Bo3 went the full length to three games. Team Secret managed to find their groove and went on to dominate the whole qualifiers, beating Alliance in the finale to earn a spot for the Major.

Region Europe – CIS-Region
The CIS-Region was also very competitive with multiple strong teams. Virtus.pro happened to be on another level: they didn’t lose a single game in the round robin phase and were favorites in the playoffs. Even with hard opponents such as Team Empire and Natus Vincere, Virtus.pro stayed calm and went on to win in the finale against Natus Vincere in two games with two wins.
Virtus.pro has won the Qualifiers for the CIS-Region.
Teams in China had more hope to earn a spot as they had two spots to distribute. In the very contested round robin phase three teams called attention to themselves: Invictus Gaming, Vici Gaming and CDEC Gaming. All with a record of 7-2. Behind them followed iG Vitality with 5-4. In the playoffs then the surprise: iG Vitality managed to beat their brother-team Invictus Gaming and was the first team to qualify in China. Not really worried about this result, Invictus Gaming won against Vici Gaming and earned the second spot.

For SEA there were two spots as well. Again, a very contested region as favorites Execration had a very exit after the round robin phase. Clutch Gamers, TNC Pro Team and Team Faceless had the same record with 7-2. Team Faceless earned the first spot after very hard Bo3s against TNC Pro Team and Mineski.GGNetwork. Just like Team Faceless, TNC Pro Team managed to earn the second spot after hard games against Clutch Gamers and Mineski.GGNetwork.
