LPL 2017 LoL Pro League China LogoThe LPL Regional Qualifier tournament was a 2 round tournament where the teams were competing for their regions 3rd seed to the 2017 LoL World Championship. The LPL region’s top 3 teams were competing under the 2 rounds but only 1 team would be able to punch their ticket to the world stage, which team came out on top? The Tournament started with Invictus Gaming vs. OMG, so let’s recap!

  • There was a best of 3 to determine the 3rd place team.
  • The overall winner takes the LPL no.3 seed to Worlds.
  • There were 3 competing teams.
  • Seeding was based off of overall season performances (Circuit points).

Round 1 (Semi-finals)

Game 1 had Invictus Gaming taking an early lead and sat at a 2k lead by 10mins. There are a few kills traded over the next few minutes and as we pass 20mins IG are sitting with a 5k gold lead. IG are pressuring Baron at 22mins but OMG get a phenomenal steal, closing the gold gap down significantly. At 27mins OMG are at a 5k gold lead but IG find an outstanding engagement that has them ruling a team fight, with a significantly player advantage they push for a win by 29mins. Game 2 has a lot of kills traded between the teams during the earlier stages of the game but IG come out on top, taking a small gold lead. At 21mins the IG side-lane pressure becomes significant as a fight breaks out in the top lane, OMG manage to come out on top and they quickly rush to clear Baron. The IG jungler walks in as it’s being cleared and manages to steal it. IG quickly collapse on OMG at 28mins and expand their lead. At 31mins IG look for Baron but OMG manage to steal it this time; the following fight has IG cleaning up OMG. IG takes a fight at 36mins and manages to push for another win. Game 3 had IG taking an early lead and some phenomenal mechanics around 8mins has them extending it. Both teams trade kills over the next few minutes but at 22mins IG find a phenomenal fight that pushes them into a 4k lead. OMG make an attempt at Baron but IG manage to steal it, cleaning up most of OMG afterwards and making a significant push. IG begin to pressure the base of OMG at 28mins and they find a fight but OMG hold out, they repeat their attempt at 31mins and clean up most of OMG; they could have finished the game but decided to chase instead. After securing another Baron, IG close the game out at 35mins and claim their victory in the series.

Series Victory: Invictus Gaming. IG ran into only a few issues in this series, there were a lot of issues around Baron and they had many objectives stolen from them. They managed to earn their position in the finals and have their eyes on the World Championship.

Round 2 (Finals)

WE manage to pick up a fairly significant lead before the clock strikes 10mins; they use this commanding lead at 22mins when a fight breaks out. After acing IG at 23mins, WE secure their Baron and make a push for the IG base at 25mins. They quickly ace IG in their base and push for a quick win at 26mins. Game 2 has WE taking another early lead but IG strike back at around 8mins. A big fight erupts at 11mins and equalises the gold. Over the next few minutes the team’s trade a few kills but as we reach 23mins IG manage to ace WE and they secure Baron. At 25mins, while IG are sieging, a fight breaks out and IG begin to break the WE base. IG manage to secure a 2nd Baron at 31mins and they look to close out the game, which they achieve after taking a fight just moments later. Game 3 has a lot of early action, the gold stays close between the teams until IG come out on top of a fight by dragon at 21mins. A fight for Baron breaks out at 25mins and IG come out on top, quickly securing baron and sieging the base of WE after. IG picks a fight at 30mins and they quickly ace WE, pushing for another win just before 31mins. Game 4 has both teams trading kills during the earlier stages of the game; a significant fight erupts at 19mins where WE manage to take a small lead. At 21mins WE start to pick off the IG players, expanding their lead. WE start Baron at 27mins and they secure it after cleaning up the majority of IG. They use this baron to quickly siege and at 32mins they manage to come out on top of another fight, following up with a push another victory in the series. Game 5 has WE taking an early lead once again, they manage to capitalise with this around 20mins as they pick off some IG members and clear up an early Baron. At 25mins a huge fight breaks out where WE clean up 4 members of IG, after this fight they manage to rush down the middle lane and take open up the IG nexus. Team WE pick a fight at 28mins in the IG base and in xPeke fashion their middle lane player closes out the game in iconic fashion, giving WE the win they need to take the series.

Series Victory: Team WE. Team WE came into this series in dominant fashion, they had an extremely clean first game and followed it up with some consistent performances, their ability to pick off their opponents really handed them some phenomenal opportunities and they’re definitely going to be a team to watch during the World Championship 2017.
