Preview and Predictions IEM Cologne 2015

Dignitas vs. Qiao Gu Reapers

After having matches already announced changes were made to the participating teams, this left Qiao Gu Reapers taking the place of EDward Gaming and Dignitas filling in for Team Liquid. So, with both of the previous teams being replaced this match has taken quite a turn. Dignitas being the 6th place team from NA going against the 2nd place LPL team, stayed tuned to see if Dignitas can pull something out of their hat to push their way through the series in the IEM Cologne Quarter-finals!

Qiao Gu LPL Logo - IEM Cologne 2015  Qiao Gu Reapers: QG, with multiple strong performances, took 2nd place in the LPL Summer Split and also the LPL Summer Playoffs, losing out to LGD who went to the World Championship 2015. QG have shown consistency and great strength throughout their entire time together and we can expect them to come into this series with those same abilities.

Team Dignitas Logo - IEM Cologne 2015 Dignitas: DIG is taking a sub to Cologne for this tournament, their support player Kiwikid is being replaced for a short period with Jesiz. This could bring into question their current synergy as they only ended in 6th place in NA with their starting roster, of which they’ve replaced multiple players, but Dignitas has often had something up their sleeve or have adapted to patches in great fashion so let’s look to them for a bit of flavourful innovation.

Qiao Gu Reapers are definitely coming into this series with an advantage in comparison to Dignitas’ month old roster. They’re a well versed team that have practiced against some of the top tier teams in the world but Dignitas have always been able to pull something off as long as they don’t do an infamous throw. The current Dignitas roster is built with some familiar names and are looking to be a formidable team but only if they can synergise well and improves as a single entity, of which Qiao Gu Reapers has already achieved.

Dignitas have shown that they can push teams to their limits and even further if the circumstances go in their favour but Qiao Gu Reapers have proven to be an extremely formidable team in their region and are quite feared in other regions too. Their aggressive map movements and relentless pressure can push any team to their limits but they’re not perfect. QG has a more precise style of play then DIG, better vision control and pressure across the map but the new players they’ve introduced could assist in the improvements they’ve been in need of. We could be looking at an extremely exciting and intense series or one that ends quickly, I’m thinking the latter but I don’t want to disregard either team as changes have been made and either one could be ahead of the curve when it comes to the meta.

Prediction: Qiao Gu Reapers to take the series handily, even when trying to look past the lack of experience in the new Dignitas roster the QG team could give nearly any team a run for their money, I’ll be looking for a 2:0 Qiao Gu Reapers series victory but Dignitas might be able to pull something out of their hat for a win, even if they do that I don’t think it’ll happen twice in a row.

Cloud9 vs. H2K Gaming

After their miraculous recovery and making it to the World Championship 2015 a lot of hype still surrounds Cloud9 and with their new team they’re looking extremely strong and could bring a lot of trouble. H2K however have made some additions to their team for IEM and the changes are significant, bringing in well-known players that could push them into a powerful position. Either of these teams could take the series, phenomenal matches are to be seen, but who will come out on top?

Team Cloud 9 Logo - IEM Cologne 2015 Cloud9: Their fantasy Cinderella story is over and they’ve shown that their competitive drive and ability to thrive through hard times has made any viewer in the world knowledgeable of their ability to perform. We can expect to see good things from them and their extremely likeable team, a fan favourite, so join them and let’s see Cloud9 show their new found strength!

H2K Gaming Logo - IEM Cologne 2015 H2K: With a few new players filling in for the roster while they’re getting things patched together they’re looking like a solid group of players that, if working through their problems, could thrive and show some dominating performances but this all comes with great inexperience playing together as the announcement was only made on December 8th for their IEM team. We’ll have to watch what they can pull out with the well named team of players they’ve put together but I expect to see a fairly strong performance.

For this series I think Cloud9 are coming into it with an advantage, players on their team already have a comfortable synergy together and they’ve had enough time with their new players to fill any void of what they could be missing whereas H2K have only had 10 days before the tournament to prepare and it’s more than difficult to work through team issues with the stressed of time bearing down on you. Cloud9 have played well, great in fact, and the new additions they’ve made will improve their early game pressure immensely and the shot calling from their veteran player will keep their late game in check. It’ll be difficult for the unpractised H2K to come over this but their choice in players to recruit would be hard to improve on, especially with how close IEM is. They’ve got veteran players that are extremely well experienced and have proven to have a passion and drive to come out on top against every and any team they go against. I can’t talk about how they are as a team because they’re yet to competitively play as one, much like the new C9 roster, but the individual players have a lot to prove.

Prediction: I think Cloud9 are going to take the series with a 2:1, the lack of time for preparation will stop H2K from thriving in this tournament and as much as I’d love to see their players be rewarded for their and drive C9 just have a clear advantage regarding their time and practice together.
