EU LCS Week 5 – Day 1
Many exciting games are upon us as we enter week 5! After our 90% prediction rate for week 4 we’ll be aiming for something similar but as always the perfect week of predictions is the dream. For Week 5 Day 1 of the EU LCS we’ll be looking into Unicorns of Love vs. H2k and G2 Esports vs. Team Vitality, why these games? H2k have been confidently taking wins but the UoL squad has an unpredictability that can bring some extremely exciting games and as for G2 vs. VIT we’ll be looking at 2 extremely high level teams going head to head which could change the outcome of the season leader. Fnatic have made a roster change, their support player Noxiak has been replaced by a player called Klaj and H2k will continue to use Selfie in the middle lane. Don’t forget to tune into the stream for some phenomenal games and remember to keep an eye out for roster changes as IEM Katowice 2016 is on March 4th!
Week 5 | Day 1 – Match #1: Unicorns of Love vs. H2K
Start Time: February 11, 09:00 AM PST/ 12:00 PM EST/ 18:00 CET
The Unicorns have climbed up the ladder and are sitting on a 6:2 score. Sitting so closely to H2k this game could equalise these teams and possibly cause a 3 way top team tie at the end of the day depending on how the games play out. Just how well can the UoL squad handle the H2k team that have been so difficult to overcome?
Unicorns of Love: A team with unpredictability is a team that can be difficult to strategize against. H2k have often used strategies to pick apart their opponents but this could come as a challenge when trying to pick apart the Unicorns of Love. Sitting on a respectable 6:2 this team could climb to the top of the ladder if things go their way. But to do that they’re going to need to get past H2k first.
H2k: Nearly undefeated this H2k team has been extremely efficient and strategic. All of the other competing teams have faced an extreme challenge when coming up against H2k and they’ve been improving throughout the season. With passion and drive this team will surely be a difficult challenge to overcome but just how well can they handle the aggression and unpredictability of the Unicorns of Love.
H2k are at an advantage here but it’s difficult to explain just how much of an advantage they have. They’re only 1 win ahead of the Unicorns of Love and all it’d take is this loss for them to be tied. I think H2k are more strategic and organised but that’s not necessarily a good thing, it means they’re easier to analyse; whereas on the Unicorns of Love’s side they can be unpredictable and difficult to follow, especially with their regular jungler changes recently.
H2k are going to want to stick with their regular power picks, Elise in the jungle with a scaling marksman such as Lucian or Corki; tank in the top lane and high damage wave clear in the middle lane such as Viktor or even the very same Corki. Their support champion will come down to team composition, if they’ve got a squishy team they should stick to their Alistar or Trundle but if they’ve got the top lane tank then a Janna or even a Soraka could do wonders for them. An early line of pink wards for vision should deter the earlier map pressure of UoL and if they manage to charge their lanes ahead and take the out turrets in a strategic fashion then they should be able to gain a sizable lead.
Unicorns of Love are going to want to play the first few minutes slowly but before the mid-game comes they need to turn aggressive, before H2k manage to get all of the outer turrets the UoL squad is going to want to punish any rotations they manage to follow. Unicorns of Love are going to want to grab Lucian or Ezreal in the bottom lane paired with a tank that they’ve played before such as Alistar or even the more common Braum. A lot of wave clear in the middle lane such as Viktor or Lulu and their typical jungle Reksai pick with the possibility of Kindred should open up the team’s options for both the early aggression and the late game team fighting. They’re going to need to turn aggressive to avoid the macro pressure of H2k however if they don’t want to fall behind.
Prediction: H2k Victory. Unicorns of Love are, in my opinion, the most likely team to take down H2k but with the improvements that H2k have managed to make recently and even with Selfie covering the middle lane for Ryu they’ve been performing exceptionally and I expect to see even more improvements from them as they take their 8th win.
Week 5 | Day 1 – Match #2: Fnatic vs. Elements
Start Time: February 11, 10:00 AM PST/ 01:00 PM EST/ 19:00 CET
Fnatic have recently just changed their support player and it could change the way they play the game, Noxiak was a solid support and really consistent but without inside information we can’t begin to understand why the change happened. We’re just going to have to watch and decide for ourselves if the change was worth it. Elements are sitting on 3:5 whereas Fnatic are on a significantly stronger 5:3 so they’ve got a clear advantage here, I also think they’re more decisive and are not afraid of being proactive which is why they’re the most likely of these 2 teams to gain an early advantage.
Prediction: Fnatic Victory. Their performances recently have been strong and they’ve made many improvements whereas Elements still struggle to make proactive moves to gain an advantage or to even come back from a deficit. I expect Fnatic to take a lead in the middle game and push for a 35min victory.
Week 5 | Day 1 – Match #3: Origen vs. Splyce
Start Time: February 11, 11:00 AM PST/ 02:00 PM EST/ 20:00 CET
Splyce are in a difficult position and are sitting on a 2:6 score which leaves them in a difficult position and awfully close to the bottom of the ladder so they’re really going to need to show up to this match. Origen are sitting on an extremely comfortable 4:4 and although they’ve had a few rough games they’re slowly improving and adapting. Splyce are going to have a hard time but it’s certainly not impossible.
Prediction: Origen Victory. They’ve in a much better place right now and have been performing significantly better than Splyce. Their team cohesion is better, their macro management better and I expect their laning phase to go significantly better in this game.
Week 5 | Day 1 – Match #4: G2 eSports vs. Team Vitality
Start Time: February 11, 12:00 PM PST/ 03:00 PM EST/ 21:00 CET
A lot of people considered G2 Esports to be the underdogs of the season but they came into the scene and erupted as they started to go through teams and work their way to a tied position at the top of the ladder. This game could well decide their fate and change the team at the top of the ladder. Team Vitality are going to have a bit of a tough time but they’ve made huge improvements and I’m sure this game is going to be extremely exciting.
G2 Esports: After working their way through the challenger scene and making it to the LCS they’ve made huge improvements and have hardly run into trouble. They’ve worked their way through nearly every team and are about to go against the same teams once again from Week 5 Day 2. How well can they keep up at this level of play? Will they fall or continue to dominate?
Team Vitality: VIT have had a few troubled matches but are making improvements still and showing that they can bring difficult matches to even the strongest of teams. I expect Team Vitality to put up a phenomenal fight here as they’ve really begun to synergise as a team and are bringing out some great strategies.
G2 are at a clear advantage here being quite a few victories over the VIT squad but there’s no way that this match is going to come easy to them. Team Vitality have been able to bring difficult games to every team they’ve faced and this will be no different. G2 are going to want to make sure they’re covered when it comes to the common picks of the VIT team and they’re going to want to strategize ways around them.
G2 are likely to pick Lucian and Braum in the bottom lane with wave clear in the middle lane such as Ahri or Viktor. For the top lane they’re likely to pick a tank such as Poppy or Malphite unless they pick Fiora where they build a Titanic hydra and swap it later into the game for a Ravenous hydra, giving them more mid game aggression. An aggressive jungler is most likely, with a Graves of a Nidalee popping up. If they stick to what they’re comfortable on they should be able to come ahead after laning phase and make strategic rotations for the turrets of VIT.
Team Vitality are more than likely going to pick Thresh or Tahm Kench as the support for a Corki or Miss Fortune, which has been a common pick for them. In the jungle I expect them to pick something aggressive that can adapt to the late game such as Elise or Reksai, both of which they’ve shown they can play, and finally for the top lane we’re going to see something odd for sure. This team has played Lucian top, Kennen top and Olaf top along with a string of more. If they can bring out something surprising once again they might be able to gain advantages due to the lack of experience that G2 could have playing against the surprise champion.
Prediction: G2 Esports Victory. They’ve got superior strategies in my opinion and even have a stronger laning phase which can propel them ahead in terms of mid game gold. Their rotations are more fluid and I expect them to take the victory by 40mins, it could be slow but there could be some explosive team fights.
Week 5 | Day 1 – Match #5: Roccat vs. Giants
Start Time: February 11, 01:00 PM PST/ 04:00 PM EST/ 22:00 CET
Both of these teams could really use this victory but unfortunately only one of them can take it. Roccat have 1 victory to their name which is more than Giants but the Giants have been improving, slowly. I expect there to be a lot of fights, slower rotations that are more heavily punish and for there to possibly be an extreme snowball in which of one of these teams flies ahead in terms of gold.
Prediction: Roccat Victory. They’ve already taken a victory and Giants have been having a really rough time lately. Giants have made a few slow improvements but Roccat have made some of their own which will make it extremely difficult for Giants to take the win.
Now we’re entering the part of the LCS where the teams that are going head to head have faced each other before! So beneath each match header there will be a small caption to let you know what the current head to head standings are. On day 2 we’ll be watching Origen vs. Team Vitality along with H2k vs. G2 Esports. I chose to focus on these 2 matches because Team Vitality have made huge improvements and managed to take down G2 Esports on day 1. Along with that we’ll get to watch 2 of the top standing teams face off in the H2k vs. G2 Esports match. I think these 2 games are going to be full of excitement and moments that could keep us on the edge of our seats. Don’t forget to tune into the EU LCS on the 12th February!
Week 5 | Day 2 – Match #1: Origen vs. Team Vitality
Head to Head record: Origen 0:1 Team Vitality
Start Time: February 12, 09:00 AM PST/ 12:00 PM EST/ 18:00 CET
Origen managed to take their 5th victory and is looking better for it, still a bit rocky but they’ve made huge steps forward and are more consistent. Team Vitality has made improvements of their own however, so much so that they were able to take down G2 who had only lost 1 match previously. Just how well could Origen handle VIT?
Origen: Being able to consistently take down mid-tier teams has assisted in their climb back up the ladder but this match they’re facing off against one of the higher tier teams and it’s going to be a really difficult match for them. Origen has become more consistent and have shown that they have versatility in their lanes which can help them stall and win but what if they’re not given the chance?
Team Vitality: After their victory over G2 I can confident say that VIT are stepping up their game and are looking to climb up the ladder during this second half of the split. After having already made substantial improvements they’re now able to have more dominating or calculated strategic victories over their opponents which could help against strategies that Origen are likely to pull out.
Team Vitality is at an advantage here and it’s fairly clear. They’re ahead in terms of wins and losses but that’s not the tipping point; it’s the fact that they manage to take down the previously 7:1 G2 Esports. This means that they’ve made improvements enough to contest the top tier games this split and could come back during this second half to contest the top of the ladder.
Origen is going to want to follow their current style of champion composition where they stick a later game marksman in the bottom lane with a tank such as Alistar or Poppy with a Lucian or Tristana. Doing so lets them scale to the late game and if they stick to drafting wave clear in the middle lane on a high dps mage such as Ahri then they greatly increase their chances. A high damage jungler for early game pressure has assisted in their victories and last but not least their most versatile top lane, which could have either a wave clear DPS or a tank to mitigate damage on their carries. This seems like the most successful composition they’ve used, or similar to, and it’s the most likely one they could draft going against VIT. The comfort and success speaks for itself and Origen could use the comfort when going against a team that appears to be ahead of the game.
Team Vitality has often used the same champions and it’s surprising to not see certain bans being targeted at them. We’re likely to see a Fiora in the top lane as VIT often have a carry champion there with a CC tank support in the bottom lane with a hyper-scaling marksman such as Corki. Their most successful junglers are those that can pressure the early game and emit a lot of damage in a short period of time such as Lee Sin or Elise; when paired with a wave clearing and high damage mid lane champion such as Ahri of Gangplank they’ll be able to give their opponents and extremely hard time.
When these teams go head to head Ahri is going to be a contested pick, Gangplank is likely to be banned and Elise is likely to show up because she’s had great performances on both teams. With picks such as these being contested by both teams one of these teams is going to gain an advantage through the drafting phase and the worse off team is going to have to quickly adapt.
Prediction: Team Vitality Victory. It’s difficult to ignore their victory over G2, that pushed them ahead of Origen and has shown us that VIT are improving a significant amount, Origen might not be able to keep up but this match is sure to be exciting.
Week 5 | Day 2 – Match #2: Unicorns of Love vs. Fnatic
Head to Head record: Unicorns 1:0 Fnatic
Start Time: February 12, 10:00 AM PST/ 01:00 PM EST/ 19:00 CET
This match here is one of my favourite of the day, Fnatic have shown some unique strategies and it could give the Unicorns of Love a difficult time. UoL have been having issues with their jungler and it could be knocking off their performances. Fnatic’s recent change to their bottom lane means that communication is a bit off and if UoL can make things a bit hectic the Fnatic roster might not be able to keep up.
Prediction: Fnatic Victory. After their unique strategy used in Week 5 Day 1 I’m expecting this team to have a few more tricks up their sleeve and I’m hoping to see one of them during Day 2. This match could explode into hectic team fighting so keep your eyes peeled.
Week 5 | Day 2 – Match #3: H2K vs. G2 eSports
Head to Head record: H2k 1:0 G2 Esports
Start Time: February 12, 11:00 AM PST/ 02:00 PM EST/ 20:00 CET
My highlighted match of the day, H2k who are the current top standing team going against G2 Esports who are one of the highest competing teams this split. G2 are sure to put up a phenomenal fight here and could take down H2k, possibly dethroning them, but with how well H2k have been performing lately is that even possible?
H2k: Phenomenal performances on every type of team composition means this team is extremely versatile and can adapt to whatever their opponents manage to pull out. Having the ability to adapt allows their lanes to carry the later stages of the game regardless of how the earlier stages go. They’ve only taken 1 loss so far and I expect this team to put up some amazing performances.
G2: After suffering a loss against Team Vitality the G2 team might be feeling a bit rough but there’s no time to mope! They’re going head to head against a team that’s currently sitting at the top of the ladder and if G2 manage to pull out a win here they’ll be tied for the top. Giving them a chance to claim the throne should be motivation enough for them to bring their A game.
I think H2k are at an advantage here, G2 suffered quite a loss at the hands of Team Vitality because they kept on making mistakes and VIT were able to capitalise on them. If they do the same thing against H2k they’re going to be losing out on more resources and global pressure because H2k are relentless when it comes to pushing.
H2k are likely to pick a carry in the top lane, something that can transition well between damage and tank. Their most recent performances have been with Poppy and Fiora and I expect to see something similar unless G2 pull out an unorthodox top lane champion. We’re likely to see either Elise or Kindred in the jungle paired with a wave clearing AoE dps in the middle lane such as Viktor or Corki. For the bottom lane they usually run a utility tank if they’re with a champion such as Corki or a utility mage when paired with a marksman such as Lucian or Ezreal. A team composition following what they’re comfortable with should assist them in capitalising on any mistakes they manage to see and will allow them to really push the limits of G2.
G2 Esports should focus on getting that Braum in the bottom lane in addition to a Lucian or Ezreal marksman, similar to their opponent’s marksman of choice. Wave clear and burst in the middle lane such as Viktor or Ahri is likely but Corki is also a possibility, with Corki being a likely choice for both teams I expect it to pull a ban or first pick. A high DPS jungle such as Graves or Nidalee should give G2 comfort and the ability to pressure the earlier stages of the game, which is the most likely stage for them to gain a lead.
A hair match as both of these teams run similar champions, compositions and draft in a similar way. This could be a clash of styles where the team that’s made the most improvements or has done the most research will come out on top. I don’t expect explosive team fights but some odd strategies might just show up.
Prediction: H2k Victory. G2 have suffered quite a loss recently against Team Vitality and I expect H2k to have done their homework on why things went badly for G2. G2 have been making a lot of mistakes whereas H2k have been making even more improvements on their already solid style of play, it’s going to be tough for G2 andi expect H2k to come out quite clearly on top.
Week 5 | Day 2 – Match #4: Elements vs. Roccat
Head to Head record: Elements 1:0 Roccat
Start Time: February 12, 12:00 PM PST/ 03:00 PM EST/ 21:00 CET
Roccat are in an extremely tough position. After losing to Giants there’s this big realisation that Roccat really need to make a few huge improvements to contest games against the stronger teams of the split. Elements however are not one of these top teams and a prone to making mistakes whilst not making pro-active map movements. This is a game that could be stalled out and taken by either team, depending on who manages to take the earlier advantage.
Prediction: Elements Victory. They’re still ahead of Roccat in my opinion and I see Roccat as the current worst performing team of the season. They may have taken that victory against Vitality but they’ve just not been able to make improvements whereas the other competing teams have. I expect Elements to finish this game by about 35mins.
Week 5 | Day 2 – Match #5: Splyce vs. Giants
Head to Head record: Splyce 1:0 Giants
Start Time: February 12, 01:00 PM PST/ 04:00 PM EST/ 22:00 CET
Giants managed to take a win! Against Roccat they put up quite a performance but this match here will be a test on just how much they’ve improved. Splyce are near the bottom of the ladder along with Giants and Roccat and this could be a chance for Giants to start a Cinderella climb at the end of the split. If Giants manage to take this victory they’ll tie themselves with Splyce on the ladder. Splyce are going to need to watch out because they’ve not shown significant improvement recently and Giants might just be able to force them into a bad match-up.
Prediction: Splyce Victory. Giants have made improvements, for sure. But I’m not so sure that it’s enough to take down many of the other teams, Splyce included. They might be near the bottom of the ladder but there can still be a huge skill difference and in my opinion there is. Splyce should be able to avoid any major mistakes in the earlier stages of the game and I expect them to come out on top with a victory.
