Week 2 | Day 1 – Match #1: Giants vs. G2 eSports
Start Time: January 21, 09:00 AM PST/ 12:00 PM EST/ 18:00 CET
G2 Esports have surprised a large amount of the viewership with their performances so far but at the beginning of a season no team should be underestimated. Currently sitting at 2-0 by the top of the leader board they’ve paved their way for the season as long as they can keep up. Giants however are in a tough position and sit by the bottom of the board with a score of 0-2, scraping together their experiences to try and achieve a win before the end of week 2 to open up their options and show their strength.
G2 Esports: Phenomenal performances have set G2 up nicely at the start of the season and have opened up their options, built some formidability and have shown that they are not a team to mess with. Precise strategy and high levels of mechanical skill on their carries has assisted them in working their way up but can they keep it up? As we step into week 2 keep an eye out for G2!
Giants: Down in the dumps, Giants need to find a way to work together and build their synergies so they can at least attempt to take a few victories in week 2! It’ll come hard as they’re going against an undefeated team and on the 2nd day they’ll be against a team that had a much stronger showing than them but if they can focus on the smaller mistakes they’re making I could see them start a climb of their own.
G2 are easily coming into this match-up with an advantage, having a 2-0 score in comparison to a 0-2 score is significant. G2 Esports play much more precise and look like they have much more experience in general. Their macro level play has been great and their micromanagement in team fights and lanes has also been pretty amazing. Giants are going to have an extremely tough time and to walk tall with the other winners in the EU LCS they’re going to need to make some serious adjustments and improvements.
For Giants to come up to the level that G2 have been playing they’re going to need to improve on their micromanagement, this could be an easy fix if they work on simple communication but improving shot-calling is significantly more difficult. Stepping up their laning shouldn’t be too much of an issue; they’ll need to apply more global pressure to slow down G2 and hopefully out manoeuvre them when working around objectives. G2 Esports will need to apply the early pressure, force Giants into a position in which they need to fight to survive and force them into a corner, forcing a lead and running away with it.
Prediction: G2 Esports Victory. They’ve shown a higher level of play, currently sitting 2-0 over their opponents and have shown that they’re playing at a higher level from both macro and micro sides of the game. It’ll be difficult to overcome but it’s not impossible, I hope Giants put up a good fight but I think the predicted outcome is to be expected.
Week 2 | Day 1 – Match #3: Origen vs. Unicorns of Love
Start Time: January 21, 11:00 AM PST/ 02:00 PM EST/ 20:00 CET)
A lot of people feel that Origen is an extremely underperforming team and you can’t really blame anyone that feels like they have. They’re sitting 0-2 but what people aren’t thinking about is who they’ve lost to! They lost to H2k who are sitting at the top of the ladder and Fnatic who have always contested the season with phenomenal performances. Their performance against Fnatic was pretty good however they fell at the end and had an even harsher loss after that, can they step up against the 2-0 Unicorns Of Love?
Origen: A tough situation has left the previous 2nd seed European team at the bottom of the ladder and in a dire situation. They really need to step up this week and take a stand to start climbing their way back up to the top of the ladder. They need to make minor improvements to stand against the stronger teams and to stay away from falling to the weaker teams. Can Origen take that step forward?
Unicorns of Love: It wasn’t all that expected that UoL would take a 2-0 in the first week of the EU LCS but they really stepped up and managed to take a few victories, keeping that lead will be difficult though as they step into the 2nd week. They’ll be facing opponents who are considered more difficult and could face a challenge with Origen, they’ll need to make minor improvements to stay ahead of the pack and continue to push for the top of the ladder.
Unicorns Of Love is coming into this match with a clear advantage but I don’t think it’s as big as a lot of people assume, they’re 2-0 which is excellent for them. It propels their morale and gives them an extreme confidence boost which will allow them to pick more comfortably and make more confident decisions whereas Origen, who is sitting 0-2, will want to make safer decisions and take fewer risks to try and take a victory from general skill alone.
Origen needs to really take a hold of their early game issues. Stop picking for a later game and force their opponents into terrible situations. Their team fighting capability is phenomenal and they’ve shown that they’re more than ready to perform. They need to pick either carries or a jungler than can pressure the early game to force their opponents lanes, giving them the time and pressure needed to force objectives and take fights that they’re going into with an upper hand.
Unicorns of Love want to force Origen’s hand, pressuring them in the early game; it’s Origen’s biggest weakness and with one of their strongest players being their jungler they should be able to apply pressure throughout the map. Taking such advantages early in the game has consistently force Origen into submission where they’ve slowly been starved out of the game and lost. Unicorns of Love just need to apply these pressures in the early game and avoid mistakes that would give Origen a lead.
Prediction: Unicorns Of Love Victory. Statistics don’t apply to everything and Origen can pull out something here to take the victory, I wouldn’t put it past them. But sticking with what we know about both teams the Unicorns are at a clear advantage here and I expect them to abuse Origen in the early game and take the game.
Week 2 | Day 1 – Match #5: Fnatic vs. H2K
Start Time: January 21, 01:00 PM PST/ 04:00 PM EST/ 22:00 CET
H2k are sitting at the top of the ladder with a 2-0 score, like a few of the other teams, only now they’ll be facing some challenging and more formidable opponents such as Fnatic and G2 Esports. Fnatic are sitting with a single lost game and 1 victory, a 1-1, and although their loss was crushing they’ve shown that they can perform. A stunning performance in their first game set in notion other teams focusing their top lane to avoid Gamsu carrying once again. It’ll be tough but either team could take this and I’m sure it’ll be one hell of a game.
H2k: Fantastic performances have propelled H2k to the top of the ladder and they’re aiming to keep their place. They could be facing a tough week though, going against more difficult and adaptive teams. They’ll need to stay ahead of the curve and work out their opponents weaknesses to stay at the top but it’ll certainly be challenging.
Fnatic: A once destructive team that was feared by the entire EU LCS, they’ve had to rebuild once again but their carries that stuck it out with the team are taking more serious roles to help shape their members. Difficult times have come as they’re sitting 1-1 but they can still work their way up, just 1 victory against a top team will shoot them up closer to the top of the ladder.
H2k are at an obvious advantage but only in terms of wins, Fnatic have shown a fantastic ability to perform and could prove to be quite the opponent for H2k. Fnatic may have fallen but only to a team that is sitting at the top along with H2k.
H2k are going to want to force the top lane of Fnatic into a low economy style of play where he’s trying to rush tankier items to assist his team. If the Fnatic top laner takes a lead then H2k could be in serious trouble but if the global pressure from H2k can shut down the Fnatic economy they could be looking at a quick win, like what happened last week to Fnatic.
It’s very hit or miss and the game is completely dependent on how the teams handle the early game, if H2k can force Fnatic into making mistakes or into positions in which they can capitalize and take advantages then they should be able to storm through the game but if Fnatic can survive the early stages of the game they should be able to force team fights and I believe that Fnatic have better team fighting potential, after taking a few fights they can force objectives and draw the game out until they can reach a close.
Prediction: Fnatic Victory. Although H2k are sitting in a better position on the ladder I think that Fnatic are going to have made the necessary improvements to surprise us all, bringing H2k down the ladder and on their level. Fnatic will have a hard time but I think it’s a reasonable outcome to wait and see as we watch the games, keep an eye out for the early pressure of both teams.
EU LCS Week 2 Day 2
After a first day full of exciting games, a few of which were quite drawn out, we’re entering day 2 of the European League of Legends Championship Series, EU LCS, and it’s full of phenomenal and exciting games! We’ll finally be full of clear ideas about which teams really are standing at the top. We’ll be looking at the 3 fan favourite matches so stick around!
Week 2 | Day 2 -Match #1: Team Vitality vs. Origen
Start Time: January 22, 09:00 AM PST/ 12:00 PM EST/ 18:00 CET
Origen managed to take their first victory of the season by taking down the Unicorns of Love, who were sitting at 2-0, and they did it with a substantial lead. They managed to force their opponents into fights where Origen had the advantage and they capitalized on top of it. Team Vitality won their most recent match in Week 2 Day 1 too! Taking down Splyce but it was a rough ride, their team was ahead for the entire game, literally, but they never really pulled the trigger to push a lead. They did manage to take the victory in an extremely long game but the slow pace could be worrying for them.
Team Vitality: Having a strong lead throughout their game really set the pace of their most recent game however they were afraid to force their opponents into fights, even losing some fights due to their own poor positioning. They’re going to want to improve their ability to pressure their opponents into fights so they can open time to push for victory instead of waiting around for fights that they could possibly lose.
Origen: A phenomenal recent performance against the Unicorns of Love have helped release a lot of doubt about this team. At worst they’re a mid-range team this split with the ability to improve and pressure the best performing teams. Statements from the team have said that they were learning about the opposing teams from the first week to make their impact later on, which they are starting to show now.
Due to the recent play style of Team Vitality, working through the game to slowly build a lead, I think Origen have an advantage coming into this match. Their weakest point is during the early game where they can often make mistakes and they tend to turn advantages in the mid-game. With Team Vitality stalling out games whilst having such significant leads will allow Origen to crawl back and create opportunities to bring the game back if they ever fall behind however they’ve shown us against UoL that once they get an advantage they’re not afraid to take the fights and create larger leads in small amounts of time.
Origen is going to need to avoid early mistakes, they’ve made them consistently and it’s their biggest downfall. Their jungler is going to need to make risk assessments to avoid being killed early in counter ganks as to not throw the lanes in favour of the opposing team. Team Vitality are going to need to build their confidence, any advantage they gain they’re going to want to use it to pressure Origen as early as possible. Throwing Origen off in the early-game is absolutely key. VIT are also going to want to improve their position slightly and force more from their opponents, it’s all well and good taking an objective but it’s significantly better to take the objective by forcing larger advantages that can snowball into pushing into the enemy base.
Prediction: Origen Victory. A tough call, Team Vitality are a strong team and Origen are going to need to avoid giving an advantage away in the early game but I think with Team Vitality’s play style they should be able to not only push for victory if they gain an advantage but they stand a great chance of coming back if they fall of early.
Week 2 | Day 2 – Match #3: Fnatic vs. Unicorns of Love
Start Time: January 22, 11:00 AM PST/ 02:00 PM EST/ 20:00 CET
After their perfect score had been upset the Unicorns will be looking to keep a place near the top of the ladder, to do so they must overcome Fnatic who’ve shown great improvement in their consistency already. Both of these teams are currently sitting on a 2-1 score after Week 2 Day 1 of the EU LCS and both teams have the chance to take victory to help secure their place on the ladder but who will come out on top?
Unicorns of Love: The Unicorns burst into Season 6 with an amazing start, showing great strategy and shot-calling but that was only whilst they were ahead. “Everything just fell into place” according to the team but once things fall apart they have a much harder time grasping for the victory. Will they have gained enough information about their opponent to force the early lead in such a short period of time?
Fnatic: They took a rough hit at the end of week 1 of the EU LCS during a loss where they got absolutely dominated but they came back in week 2 by taking down the top contenders of the ladder, H2k. They’ve shown substantial improvement in such a short period of time and the longer their roster plays together the stronger they’ll become, working through any language barriers and synergy issues.
After taking down the top contenders of the ladder I think Fnatic are coming into this match with an advantage, after the Unicorns of Love took their loss against Origen it seems like there are a lot of top teams in the European competitive scene at the moment but Fnatic have been crawling their way to the top whilst the Unicorns performances have been slowly declining as teams catch up and work out the meta.
Fnatic may have a hard time against the Jungler of UoL and if they fall to the pressure early then the Unicorns could run away with the game fairly quickly. The Unicorns have shown that they’re not afraid of a little risk and they’re certainly ready for anything being thrown at them but they have weaknesses like any other team and it’s certainly their team fight positioning and partially their drafting during champion select. They opt for earlier aggression over scaling instead of finding a fine combination of both, this allows teams who survive the early game to close out advantages and claw their way back to victory, this works out extremely well for Fnatic as they have a fairly strong early game but their ability to adapt during the mid-late game is substantially better as they usually draft a combination of both early and late game.
The Unicorns are going to want to draft an early game aggressive Jungler on Diamondprox whilst having some wave clear on the middle laner and some later game scaling on their carries. I expect to see either Lee Sin or Elise in the jungle to pressure early but if they fail to do so then I expect the game to sway in favour of Fnatic.
Prediction: Fnatic Victory. Unicorns of Love have a specific strategy that’s worked quite well for them and I’m confident that they’ve not got many more strategies up their sleeves. Teams are starting to work each other out and this leaves Unicorn open to be exploited, which I expect Fnatic to do. They’ll need to draft much better during champion select but I expect Fnatic to take the victory around the 30min mark.
Week 2 | Day 2 – Match #5: G2 eSports vs. H2K
Start Time: January 22, 01:00 PM PST/ 04:00 PM EST/ 22:00 CET
G2 Esports are currently the only undefeated team left in the EU LCS and they’re sitting in 1st place. They’ve shown that if they gain a lead early they’ll pressure it quickly into a significantly greater advantage whilst also showing that if they fall behind in the earlier game they’re prepared to wait patiently for any opportunity they can capitalise on, making it difficult for teams to beat them. H2k are a difficult team to overcome with great strategy and mechanical skill, can they break the win streak of the final undefeated European team?
H2k: They’ve grown as a team and shown that they are certainly more formidable than they’ve ever been before. It’s been difficult for any team to overcome them and their only loss was due to poor late game shot-calling. If they improve their communication, certainly towards the later stages of the game, I can certainly see them contending for the spot at the top of the ladder.
G2 Esports: It certainly hasn’t come easy to them, they’re still undefeated but it seems their matches are lasting longer and teams are working out their strategies. They had a tough run against Giants but eventually pulled out the win. Can they make a similar come back against stronger teams though?
H2k: They may have taken a loss but they went down looking strong. The game was extended and it became extremely close, they could have taken the win if they’d stuck to their guns and avoided the final fight, they had more global pressure and could have used it to take advantage of their opponents but they cracked and fell. If they can avoid similar shot-calling mistakes I think they’ll be the most difficult opponents for G2 yet.
I think H2k are at an advantage here, G2 Esports are slowly being figured out as there was previously very little information and research that could be done on their team to compare them against top LCS teams but now they’re getting experience at the highest competitive level of League of Legends and showing their strengths and weaknesses. H2k are pretty consistent all around, their vision control is great, their early pressure is something to be reckoned with and their team fighting is formidable but they fall short when it comes to shot-calling. When the game draws out they’re open to making mistakes and they often give up advantages for unnecessary fights that can set them behind. If they take away some of that risk and stick to their initial decisions, build a bit more cohesion and focus more on their late-game strategies they’ll be a top European team for the rest of the spring split but whether or not they do that is completely unbeknownst to me.
G2 Esports are going to want to stick to their strategy as long as possible, pick their rotations carefully and avoid any unwanted conflicts early, pressure H2k into those decisions that they often get wrong and force them into fights that they’ll take regardless of being at a disadvantage. Doing so will open up their options to take more objectives of push for a victory quicker, however H2k could have improved on their issues after team discussions between week 2 day 1 and week 2 day 2 so it might not be as easy as it seems. H2k are going to want to rely on their mechanical skill and early game shot calling to build an advantage and then work their way around their opponents to get the global pressure needed to push. Even if they build a siege composition they should be able to apply enough pressure early to take an advantage, build some tempo and push G2 into their base as quickly as possible, trying to avoid any miss steps. All they need to do is play comfortably and avoid making serious mistakes, all whilst pressuring G2 and forcing them back slightly in the earlier stages of the game.
Prediction: H2k Victory. G2 are being worked out, they’re starting to have a harder time closing out games and even building leads against their opponents now, H2k should be able to apply pressure in the early game to build tempo and translate that into global objectives and possibly a few advantageous team fights that will give them a lead, H2k with a lead is a deadly force that’s extremely difficult to overcome.
