Preview and Predictions

EU LCS Summer Split Week 4 – Day 2:

Week 4 Day 1 brought a lot of uncertainty to the European LCS, so many games ended in ties so the ladder still stands in an extremely similar position to the previous week. Day 2 will be the chance for some of these competing teams to push forward and claim a stronger position for the later weeks in the summer split. We’ll be focusing on Team Vitality vs. G2 Esports along with Splyce vs. Origen with the remaining games being concluded in their own smaller sections! Make sure you tune into both live streams on Friday, June 24th!

Giants vs FC Schalke 04 EU LCS Summer Split 2016 Week 4Week 4 | Day 2 – Match #1: Giants EU LCS Team Logo LoL Giants vs. FC Schalke 04 EU LCS Team Logo FC Schalke 04

Start Time: June 24, 08:00 AM PDT/ 11:00 AM EDT/ 17:00 CEST

Giants were able to hold their own against Team Vitality on Day 1 and that’s a big statement for them to make. After having a fairly rough start to the split and only taking away 30% of their games they’ve managed to start balancing out, this is evidence of their improvement but S04 have also made a few strides forwards. S04 were able to contest a series against G2, as a few other teams have, but with their current track record it’s a big step up.

Prediction: FC Schalke Victory. S04 have shown that they’re able to contest a series against the current #1 team in Europe, this is a huge statement to make and if they can keep up the performances then I think they’ll be able to come out on top of this series.

Vitality vs G2 Esports EU LCS Summer Split 2016 Week 4Week 4 | Day 2 – Match #2: Vitality EU LCS Team Logo LoL Vitality vs. G2 Esports EU LCS Team Logo LoL G2 Esports

Start Time: June 24, 10:00 AM PDT/ 01:00 PM EDT/ 19:00 CEST

Team Vitality took their 4th tie of the split against Giants, this could be bad for them seeing as they’ve now lost 75% of their most recent games but they’ve shown us that they have the potential and ability to take on those stronger performing teams so there’s a chance they could shine here. G2 Esports are in a fairly opposite position having only lost 25% of their most recent games and that was on Day 1 against an extremely strong looking S04, if they can keep up with the improvements of other teams they’ll be able to stand up against every other team in the region.

G2 Esports look to be at an advantage here but Week 4 has had a few surprises already. G2 have had dominating performances and I think they’re going to be able to show some of that strength in this series against the inconsistent Team Vitality.

G2 Esports - EU LCS team LogoG2 Esports is likely to fight for that Irelia top lane pick that’s been showing up pretty regularly for them, pairing it with a Reksai or the Hecarim we saw on day 1. The duo lane of G2 has regularly swapped between Ezreal and Sivir as their marksmen; they’re likely to be paired with a Karma or Nami, this will give them fairly strong pressure in the lane and will scale nicely to team fight. The middle lane of G2 has shown great diversity in possible champion picks but I think we’ll be looking at more Ryze and Viktor from them. When they’re set up and on the rift I think they should set up a fairly aggressive line of vision, close to their opponent’s jungle entrances in the river and with attempts at getting some placed inside of their opponent’s jungle. This will open up opportunities for them to turn aggressive and pick fights when they’re certain they’re at an advantage. It also opens up opportunities for them to create an oppressive amount of pressure across the map with the knowledge of where their opponents are or where they’re rotating to. If they take early skirmishes they should be able to come out on top using their superior information and vision advantage, being able to pick off an opponent or take an abrupt engage to seal a team fight and propel themselves ahead. They’re going to need to spend some time scaling to properly utilize this lead but if they continue to apply pressure throughout the game with superior vision then objectives will become significantly easier and will make scaling a breeze. If they do something similar throughout the series, scale after gaining a vision advantage and pressuring any skirmish they find, then they should be able to come out on top of a game and at least contest the series for yet another victory.

Vitality - EU LCS team LogoTeam Vitality are in a bit of a more difficult position, even when they’ve taken comfortable champions they’ve often lost advantages in the earlier stages of the game so they should try and find a combination of scaling champions and champions that can pressure the earlier stages of the game. Because of this I think their duo lane should try and snag the Karma and Ezreal combination in the bottom lane as it will help them apply pressure and will give the other lanes some breathing room to scale as well. The top lane of VIT has had some trouble but champions such as Gnar are adaptable as well as Irelia and If they manage to get a hold of one then they should be able to play fairly safely and wait for their time to strike, this should be assisted by a jungler that is able to pressure the map in multiple scenarios and points during the game so a Gragas or Reksai could give them what they need. The middle lane of Team Vitality has shown comfort on Vladimir and I’d like to see it utilized once again but a Ryze or Zilean could also help them round out their composition. When they’re locked in and ready they’re going to want to set up a more defensive line of vision with wards scattered across the river and with multiple placed by and around the lanes. This will give them the time they need to react to their opponents attempted aggression and get away unscathed, avoiding giving away any form of early advantage or gold lead. They’re going to need to play through their game slowly and precisely, if they can work their way to the middle and later stages of the game whilst upholding strong defensive lines of vision they’ll be able to contest some game changing team fights which could propel them ahead, give them objective and map control as well as giving them exactly what they need to take the game. Playing things out slightly slower than usual and waiting for their team composition to click and become truly powerful will be their best opportunity to take the game along with hold strong lines of vision and controlling the map; if they can pull this off then they’ll be able to work against the style of G2 and contest the series.

Prediction: G2 Esports Victory. G2 Esports may have fallen to S04 and ended in a tie but they’ve looked phenomenal recently and hold the top place in the European LCS for a reason. They’re adaptable and often find their stride during a match regardless of the situations they’re facing. I think they’ll be able to find their fights, come out ahead and take away the series.

Splyce vs Origen EU LCS Summer Split 2016 Week 4Week 4 | Day 2 – Match #3: Splyce EU LCS Team Logo LoL Splyce vs. Origen EU LCS Team Logo LoL Origen

Start Time: June 24, 12:00 PM PDT/ 03:00 PM EDT/ 21:00 CEST

Splyce had a fairly strong performance at the start of day 1 but eventually fell into a tie after H2k clawed away a match. Splyce have shown that they have an extremely difficult time against the teams sitting by the top of the ladder but they’ve been able to take or contest series’ against every team below them so far. This gives them a good position to start from when facing off against Origen however Origen managed to tie their series with Fnatic which is huge! This could turn out to be an extremely exciting match, closet than a lot of people expect.

I think Splyce are at an advantage here, Origen’s tie with Fnatic was fantastic but it was so far from a smooth victory. Splyce have been able to contest their games against nearly every other competing team and are currently sitting in a good position on the ladder, this will just be another step forward for them.

Splyce EU LCS Team Logo LoLSplyce has shown great comfort on Fizz in the top lane recently and with that champion being extremely adaptable I think it’s a pretty good pick and should be used again, it’s also likely to be assisted by a Reksai in the earlier stages of the game which will assist in any early game weakness. The middle lane of Splyce will probably look to pick up Swain, Vladimir or Anivia; all of which can comfortably scale and impact the game in significant ways. The duo lane of Splyce has picked Caitlyn very regularly and I think it’s going to make more appearances, being paired with a Bard or a Nami. When they’re ready and on the rift they should set up a default style of vision, focusing on warding across the river and regularly refreshing vision close to the lanes. This will assist them in both avoiding and taking fights but it’s not as effective at a single play style and should be adapted throughout the match. Splyce have regularly picked scaling champions which lack early game strength to take regular skirmishes however they’ve picked for great area control and could at least contest those smaller fights in the earlier stages; they should stick with the safer option and farm their lanes for a length of time before engaging in fights. If they work heavily on controlling vision they should be able to pick team fights in the middle and later stages of the game, as long as they’re confident in their area and map control they should be able to come out on top and will thrive if they catch their opponents in or close to a choke point. They should be able to gain a lead through team fighting and waiting patiently to scale, it’s a slow style and has to be very calculated but Splyce have shown the ability to pull it off before. If they follow a similar style throughout the series whilst making minor changes they should be able to take away a game and at least contest a tie for the series.

Origen - EU LCS Team LogoOrigen has picked Karma during every possible opportunity; I believe they’ve had Karma picked in their last 6 matches so more appearances wouldn’t be surprising in both the middle and bottom lanes. I think it’s better utilized as a support when paired with the likes of an Ashe or Sivir; this will give them good lane pressure and open up opportunities for the team. The middle lane of Origen, when not falling onto the Karma flex pick, has shown favour for Azir so I expect it to show up for them on Week 4 Day 2. The top lane for Origen will be extremely important; I’d like to see more Irelia appear there for them as it has the potential to take control of a game but if it’s unavailable then Gnar is a consistent and strong fall-back champion pick. Their jungle has shown a variety of champion picks but I’d like to see more Kindred and Elise from them, both of those champions can pressure the earlier stages of the game and give Origen the advantage they need to step up and control the map. When ready and running they’re going to want to set up a slightly aggressive line of vision, mostly scattered throughout the river but close to their opponent’s jungle entrances. This will give them slightly delayed information but will be significantly safer for them to refresh. They should be able to find a few fights in the earlier stages of the game that’s likely to go in their favour as they’re likely to pick champions that are stronger in the earlier stages of the game, at least in comparison to the favoured champions of Splyce. If they can find some of these fights and gain a small lead they should be able to start controlling areas of the map and picking off their opponents or picking large scale fights. This will then propel them ahead into a position where they can contest the game and set them up to contest the series.

Prediction: Tied Victory. I think Origen have the potential to take away one of the games of the series but it’s going to be difficult. Splyce appear to be at a slight advantage here and if they utilize their style correctly then Origen will have a harder time than usual but they’ve shown us that they’re able to take those later game team fights even when behind. For this reason I think they’re going to get into a good position and contest the series for a tie.

Roccat vs Fnatic EU LCS Summer Split 2016 Week 4Week 4 | Day 2 – Match #4: ROCCAT EU LCS Team Logo LoL ROCCAT vs. Fnatic EU LCS Team Logo LoL Fnatic

Start Time: June 24, 08:00 AM PDT/ 11:00 AM EDT/ 17:00 CEST

Both Roccat and Fnatic lost their victories and ended in ties to teams that appeared to be exponentially weaker than they are. They’ve either had a bad performance that will alter their position on the ladder or their opponents on Day 1 stepped up in big ways to take them down; we won’t know until the end of the week. For now we’re going to have to assume both teams had fallen off slightly, if this is the case then this series could end in a tie for the teams but I think Fnatic are still at an advantage here.

Prediction: Fnatic Victory. I think Fnatic are strong enough to come out on top of the series and walk away with a victory here instead of a tie, after their performance on Day 1 they’re going to want to come back into day 2 as confidently as possible and I think it’s going to assist their strong performances.

H2K Gaming vs Unicorns of Love EU LCS Summer Split 2016 Week 4Week 4 | Day 2 – Match #5: H2K Gaming EU LCS Team Logo LoL H2K Gaming vs. Unicorns of Love EU LCS Team Logo LoL  Unicorns of Love

Start Time: June 24, 10:00 AM PDT/ 01:00 PM EDT/ 19:00 CEST

Unicorns of love came out strong during their day 1 performance and managed to tie their series against Roccat. Roccat may be a team in the middle of the standings but this is a big step up from UoL and shows improvement on their part. This improvement could be exactly what they need to contest the series against H2k, even if ending in just a tie. H2k had a bit of a rough time with Splyce on day 1 but they’ve looked more consistence recently and are striving for a higher position on the ladder, they’ve shown it’s possible and they have the potential for it so this is bound to bring some excitement.

Prediction: H2k Victory. Although UoL managed to tie their series against Roccat, being a big step forward for them, I don’t think it’s enough of a step forward for them to take this series. H2k have shown that they’re ready to compete, they’ve shown good consistency and I think there’s a big enough skill difference for H2k to come out on top of the series with a victory instead of a tie.

EU LCS Summer Split Week 4 – Day 1:

Heading into week 4 we’re finally starting to get a defined ladder, separating the current strongest performing teams from the less fortunate. For week 4 we’ll be focusing on 2 games on each day, starting with Team Vitality vs. Giants followed by Fnatic vs. Origen. I chose these games because of the close proximity between them on the ladder along with the rivalry between the Fnatic and Origen organisations. Make sure you tune in on Thursday, June 23rd, to watch the games live! Make sure you tune into both live streams so you don’t miss anything!

FC Schalke 04 vs G2 Esports EU LCS Summer Split 2016 Week 4Week 4 | Day 1 – Match #1: FC Schalke 04 EU LCS Team Logo FC Schalke 04 vs. G2 Esports EU LCS Team Logo LoL G2 Esports

Start Time: June 23, 08:00 AM PDT/ 11:00 AM EDT/ 17:00 CEST

G2 Esports are currently sitting on the top of the ladder at 14 points with 4 wins and 2 ties, being one of the only remaining teams without a single loss. FC Schalke have performed quite well so far, they’re sitting in an above average position on the ladder and have shown that they’re ready to compete. Will S04 be able to overcome the 6 point difference?

Prediction: G2 Esports Victory. I think G2 are in a good position here, they’re sitting at nearly twice the amount of points on the ladder when compared to S04 and they’ve currently not lost a single series. I think they’ll take the series 2:0, cementing their place at the top.

Fnatic vs Origen EU LCS Summer Split 2016 Week 4Week 4 | Day 1 – Match #2: Fnatic EU LCS Team Logo LoL Fnatic vs. Origen EU LCS Team Logo LoL Origen

Start Time: June 23, 10:00 AM PDT/ 01:00 PM EDT/ 19:00 CEST

Fnatic have been on the up and up, performing like the champions that they were and they’re making a break for the top of the ladder. Origen on the other hand are lacking in consistency, they’ve had some good performances but are sitting by the bottom of the ladder. With Origen being 8 points behind Fnatic they’re going to need to really step up here but if they can take away just 1 win to tie the series they’ll prove they’re working for a better ending this split.

Fnatic look to be at quite a clear advantage here, they’re significantly ahead on the ladder and have only lost a single series; they have 4 victories under their belt along with a tie that’s really pushed them up to the top. In comparison to Origen, Fnatic are looking consistent and formidable.

Fnatic Team Logo LoLFnatic has shown a liking for Gnar in the top lane and with the fantastic performances they’ve had on it I expect it to make more appearances, if it’s unavailable then we could be seeing more Shen in the top lane. This will be assisted by jungle pressure from a Nidalee or Gragas, which can assist the lanes in the earlier stages of the game and can help counter the opponents map pressure. The middle lane of Fnatic has shown a deeper champion pool than his team mates, having played 4 different champions in the past 4 games, but I think we could be looking at more Vladimir and Viktor to assist in team fighting. Fnatic have shown a fairly strong and potentially abusive bottom lane by regularly pairing Karma or Braum with Ezreal, I expect to see this combination unless Ezreal isn’t available but even then Caitlyn is a comfortable option. When they’re ready and on the rift they’re going to want to set up an aggressive line of vision split between the river and their opponents jungle when possible, if they’re unable to press through to their opponent’s jungle to gain the vision then around the entrances will be necessary. Fnatic should be able to pressure the earlier stages of the game with their comfort champions; picking skirmishes and fights where ever they can find them will net them a gold lead which will set them up to snowball and eventually control the pace of the game. As long as they’re not making big mistakes, which they’ve avoided thus far, they should be in a great position to gain control of objectives as well as sieging fairly safely. I expect them to follow a similar style of play during the second game also and once again, if they take similar champions picks they should be able to pressure the earlier stages of the game to contest the series.

Origen - EU LCS Team LogoOrigen have had a bit of a rough time when trying to play around scaling champions but have also shown potential to thrive if they can find opportunities. To create these opportunities they might want to contest the Gnar pick in the top lane, falling back onto Poppy or Olaf if it’s unavailable. Their top lane will be greatly assisted by a Reksai or Kindred, which has been showing up regularly for them and having really good game impact. The middle lane of Origen has often been covered by a control mage such as Viktor or Azir but we could see them flex pick the Karma once again. As for the Origen duo lane, they’ve been regularly picking Karma, having it make an appearance for them in all of their latest games, but pairing it with an Ezreal worked best for them and will also take those potential picks away from their opponents. However if they’re unable to find those picks then falling back onto a Sivir paired with a Braum will not only give them survivability during laning but will also give them huge amounts of utility for late game team fighting. When they’re finally set up they should aim for early defensive warding, their laners are capable and able to work themselves into a good position. Their middle lane is what is likely to have the most impact, with one of the highest gold per minute ratings in the EU LCS; they’re going to need to funnel that strength across the rift once team fighting comes around. They should be able to control a few early skirmishes and possibly come out on top of them but it’s a risk, a safer option would to be focusing on controlling vision and picking fights when they’re in a position to pick their targets, if they can get Fnatic comfortable enough to attempt an objective or siege then they’ll be able to pick favourable fights to propel them into a lead. This lead will give them significant presence which will loom over the rift and push them to victory, giving them a great boost coming into the second game where they will fight for a series victory.

Prediction: Fnatic Victory. I’d love to see Origen tie the series but Fnatic have looked significantly stronger since the beginning of the summer split. Origen is going to need to really utilize their strongest points to come close here but I think Fnatic are a much more practiced team and will be able to work well regardless of their situation.

Splyce vs H2K Gaming EU LCS Summer Split 2016 Week 4Week 4 | Day 1 – Match #3: Splyce EU LCS Team Logo LoL Splyce vs. H2K Gaming EU LCS Team Logo LoL H2K Gaming

Start Time: June 23, 12:00 PM PDT/ 03:00 PM EDT/ 21:00 CEST

H2k are currently just pushing ahead of Splyce, having taken 1 more victory and tie over them. This doesn’t exactly reflect the strengths of both teams but H2k have managed to take down or contest matches against the stronger competing teams whereas Splyce have fallen, this is what shows a difference between the 2 teams. Splyce are going to need to work on scaling and not giving a lead in the earlier stages of the game, that’d give them a great chance here.

Prediction: Tied Victory. H2k have appeared to be a slightly stronger team so far, that’s obviously why they’re a position ahead on the ladder, but they’ve also had a few shaky performances. A lot of this series is going to be decided by how the earlier stages of the games play out for these teams but I think Splyce could show up and surprise us here, tying the series.

Vitality vs Giants EU LCS Summer Split 2016 Week 4Week 4 | Day 1 – Match #4: Vitality EU LCS Team Logo LoL Vitality vs. Giants EU LCS Team Logo LoL Giants

Start Time: June 23, 08:00 AM PDT/ 11:00 AM EDT/ 17:00 CEST

Team Vitality and Giants are currently in an equal position on the ladder, both teams sit on 6 points but they’ve reached that position in vastly different ways. Team Vitality have tied 3 of their 6 games, winning 1 and losing the remaining 2; Giants have won 2 of their games, tied 0 and have 4 losses under their belt. They’re in a similar position here however and whoever wins will take that step forward to break the 5th place that 4 teams are currently sitting in.

I think Team Vitality are at an advantage here, not only have they lost less often but they’ve been able to contest significantly more series’ they’ve played in and they’re looking like a good 4th place contender.

Vitality - EU LCS team LogoTeam Vitality is going to want to try and get a handle on things in the earlier stages of the game, waiting to scale a few of their champions will open up their options so I’ll be looking for an Irelia in the top lane which will be greatly assisted by a Zilean in the middle lane, if they’re unavailable then we could be looking at a Vladimir in the middle lane and something tanky in the top lane like a Trundle. This will be rounded off with a Gragas or Reksai jungle and the duo lane is likely to settle on a Karma support with an Ezreal or Ashe. When they’re ready and on the rift they’re going to want to play the early game fairly slowly, setting up a line of vision across the river with some place near or around their opponent’s jungle entrances. This will let them reach the middle stages of the game without much trouble or will give them access to opportunities that could net them a small lead. They’re going to want to start fights around the middle stages of the game to propel themselves ahead and they should be able to find engages fairly easy, even easier if they decide to section off parts of the map to take or contest objectives. To get the upper hand they’re going to want to try and expose the weaker members of their opponent’s team through long range engages with an Ashe arrow, a surprise engage from superior vision control or by displacing their opponents which will allow them to pick off their opponents. They should be able to take a sizable lead and start controlling the game once the team fighting occurs as long as they pick the right fights and work around their cool-downs, this will set them up with their first win of the series and give them the opportunity to contest a full victory.

Giants - EU LCS Team LogoGiants will want to try and pick away the Irelia top lane option unless they ban it, falling back onto Trundle will limit their opponent’s options and open up possibilities for an advantage. This is likely to be paired nicely with a Gragas in the jungle, giving them huge amounts of displacement and great potential to pick off their opponents. The middle lane of Giants has regularly picked Azir but has comfortably fallen back on Lissandra and Vladimir, both of which will have great potential to scale and team fight. Giants’ duo lane isn’t likely to contest the Karma pick because they’ve shown greater comfort on champions like Nami and Braum which I think will make more appearances, this will be partnered with a contested Ezreal or Ashe pick. When they’re ready and on the rift they should aim isolate locations in the rift such as choke points around the jungle entrances etc that will help them create opportunities to fight and skirmish whilst isolating or relocating their opponents to gain an advantage. To do this they’re going to need an excessive amount of vision around jungle entrances, close to lanes and across the river; gaining the information of where their opponents are will help them pick locations and targets which once killed will give them a player advantage to pressure objectives as well as giving them small gold leads each time they succeed. If they can play around their opponent’s vision and slowly gain control over areas they should be able to create multiple advantageous scenarios by catching out their opponents or forcing them into fights once ahead. If they can recreate a similar style for the second game they’ll certainly be able to contest the series.

Prediction: Team Vitality Victory. Out of both performing teams I think VIT is the only one that has the potential to take both games and the series but it won’t come easy. Giants are a lot more stable and competitive than they have been before so VIT might be challenged here.

Roccat vs Unicorns of Love EU LCS Summer Split 2016 Week 4Week 4 | Day 1 – Match #5: ROCCAT EU LCS Team Logo LoL ROCCAT vs. Unicorns of Love EU LCS Team Logo LoL  Unicorns of Love

Start Time: June 23, 10:00 AM PDT/ 01:00 PM EDT/ 19:00 CEST

Roccat are tied for 5th place along with 3 other teams, they’re in an extremely similar position to Team Vitality and have looked like a fairly consistent ‘middle of the pack’ team. They’ll be facing off against Unicorns of Love who are currently at the very bottom of the ladder with only 1 victory and 5 losses but with only a few teams and points between them UoL can close that gap quite quickly and threaten the position of Roccat on the ladder.

Prediction: Roccat Victory. Unicorns of Love could contest the series here but their track record is significantly against them, Roccat have put on strong performances and have given a lot of the competing teams a rough time. I think Roccat are the better performing team of the two and are likely to take both games here.
