Day 2 – Group B – Match #1: SK Telecom - LoL Team Logo SK T1 vs. CLG - LoL Team Logo CLG

Start Time: Saturday, March 5th: 03:20 AM PST / 06:20 AM EST / 12:20 CET

A match where 2 extremely well know teams face off to advance through the IEM tournament. SKTT1, the reigning League of Legends World Champions from Season 5, will be facing off against Counter Logic Gaming, who is currently a top tier North American LCS team. With how much things have changed since the end of Season 5 we’re sure to see these teams bring out some strategies that we may not have seen before.

SK Telecom T1 - LCK Team LogoSKTT1: With how well they were performing in Season 5 things have gone slightly downhill for them since, they’ve been having some trouble in their local region of South Korea with difficulties taking victories against the majority of the other performing teams. They’re going to need to do their best here to uphold their reputation.

Logo of LCS NA Team CLGCounter Logic Gaming: The North American LCS team are standing fairly high up their local ladder but going against the reigning Season 5 World Champions could cause them trouble early in the IEM Katowice 2016 tournament. They’re going to need to show up with their best strategies and performances to overcome this obstacle and advance to the later stages of IEM.

With how both teams have been performing in their local regions I think Counter Logic Gaming are at a slight advantage here, SKTT1 have fallen off drastically since their phenomenal performances during Season 5 and currently only hold a middle position on the LCK ladder. Even though the NA LCS is known to be of a lower skill level than the LCK the fact that CLG hold a significantly higher standing this would appear to be a small advantage in their favour.

SKTT1 are likely to pick up a utility middle lane champion such as Lulu or Zilean, it’s what they’ve been using in their recent performances and with how well it can synergize they’re likely to want to stick with it. Their bottom lane is going to want to pick up a tank support such as Alistar or Braum paired with a Lucian or Kalista if possible. For their jungle and top they’re likely to aim for either Graves or Gragas, who’re both currently quite strong picks, and their top lane is likely to pick up a carry such as Gangplank, Poppy or Fiora. Once they’ve drafted they’re going to want to get an aggressive line of vision, using it to keep track of the enemy jungler can help them force lanes to get a small early lead. Once they’ve got good tempo and possibly item spikes they’re going to want to pressure objectives, if they play it patiently they should be able to push leads and advantages slowly but they’re going to need to keep an eye on the top lane of CLG.

Counter Logic Gaming are going to want to build for the split pushing strategy that they’ve been working towards perfecting. Trying to get a strong scaling champion in the top lane such as Jax, Fiora or Pantheon should be necessary as it’s proven to be their strongest strategy. With their top lane champion picked they’re going to want a jungler than can apply pressure to the lanes to help get them ahead, a champion such as Udyr or Gragas are likely preferred. Their bottom lane is going to want to pick up the Bard that has worked extremely well for them and pair it with an Ezreal or Lucian. Their middle lane is likely to focus on a burst mage or to fall back on Corki, we could be looking at a comfortable LeBlanc pick for them. Once they’ve drafted they’re going to want to abuse their champions’ power spikes, get an early line of vision on the objectives and across their lanes to keep them safe. Their jungler is going to want to pressure the top lane to try and build an advantage for their split pusher. If they work around skirmishing with their item power spikes and attempt to catch out their opponents, forcing the fights, they should be able to gain a lead for themselves.

Prediction: Counter Logic Gaming Victory. I’d love to have sided with SKT as they’re the Season 5 World Champions but with how they’ve been performing in their local region recently I have my doubts. I think CLG are going to slowly take the victory through skirmishing and split pushing.

Day 2 – Group B – QG Reapers - LoL Team Logo QG Reaper vs. Fnatic - LoL Team Logo Fnatic

Start Time: Saturday, March 5th: 04:40 AM PST / 07:40 AM EST / 13:40 CET

Qiao Gu Reapers have made a few changes to their team since they were last playing internationally but they’ve certainly become an even greater team fighting monster. Their ability to control fights with their mechanical skill is something to be concerned about. Fnatic are going to want to focus on the earlier stages of the game because their own team fighting skills are phenomenal and we could see some explosive fights this game with amazing engages. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled.

Qioa Gu Reapers - LPL Team LogoQioa Gu Reapers: After a 13 game win streak at the start of the season they managed to gain a nice place on their local regions ladder by winning 6 game series’ before taking their 7th series and 1st loss of the season. They’re going to be an extremely challenging team but with how weak their early game can appear they’re going to need to watch out for anything sudden.

Logo of LCS EU Team FnaticFnatic: Their placement on their local regions ladder is certainly better than middle standing but not quite at the top, they’ve had some inconsistent performances but they’ve been working to improve. Their earlier game is a bit better but when they need to play from a deficit they’re in trouble. An 8:6 score in the European LCS shows that this team, regardless of their roster changes, is still a competitive team to watch out for.

With how well Qiao Gu Reapers have adapted to the meta and season I think they’re at an advantage here. Their ability to quickly become a dominating team this season lead to them taking down multiple teams in best-of-three series’ by taking 2 swift victories. Fnatic could be in a bit of trouble here but with the early game of QG not being overly strong they should be able to make it to the later stages of the game.

Qiao Gu Reapers are going to want to get the champions that they’ve shown most comfort on and have perfected throughout the season so far. I’ll be expecting to see Poppy or Fiora in the top lane with a possibility of Lissandra, this gives them a lot of team fighting versatility and can often cover multiple styles of play. Their jungler Is going to want to pick up either Gragas or Rek’sai as they’re currently extremely strong junglers and will give QG the initiation they’re going to need. Their middle lane is going to either aim to pick up a LeBlanc or Viktor as they’ve been the most consistently played champions in the QG middle lane. Their bottom lane is likely to pick up a tank such as Alistar or Thresh paired with either Kalista or Lucian in the bottom lane, maybe a Kog’maw if it’s left open. Once they’ve drafted they’re going to want to get a safe line of vision across the river to avoid global pressure from the enemy jungler, this will assist them in getting through their weakest point and getting to the skirmishing and team fighting stage that they will thrive at. Once they start picking their fights they should be able to gain a lead and push their advantages.

Fnatic will want to pick up a tank support such as Braum or Alistar in the bottom lane paired with Kalista or Lucian if possible, this gives them lane pressure and the ability to team fight in the earlier stages of the game. Their middle lane is likely to pick up Lissandra or Viktor for good wave clear and amazing team fighting potential. Their jungler is likely to pick up either Lee Sin or Gragas to apply early game pressure and initiation, with the displacements on the champions they could pick off their opponents. Their top lane has shown a repetitive urge to play Maokai in the top lane so I’ll be expecting it or another tank to appear there such as Nautilus. After the drafting phase they’re going to want to try and get a few pink wards into or near the enemy jungle, gaining that vision advantage will allow them to pressure the early game and possibly gain an advantage. If they can gain an advantage through the early pressure they should be able to rotate and take structure objectives and then force the global objectives such as Baron Nashor. This will set them up to pressure the game.

Prediction: Qiao Gu Reapers Victory. They’ve had dominating performances all season and even when their performance wasn’t “dominating” they certainly put on a show and claimed their victory. I think they’ll get through the earlier stages of the game fairly unscathed and will use their experience in team fighting to gain quite a large lead, giving them options to pressure the game.
