TI5 – Main Event Day 4 Recap and Day 5 Predictions
As we draw nearer and nearer to the Grand Finals, the picture is becoming clearer as to who we can expect to see there. Day 4 saw a number of Lower Bracket games play out, with 3 more teams eliminated from the tournament.
The day started off with a matchup between co-Cinderella’s MVP Phoenix and possible contender, Vici Gaming. MVP had had a great run up to day 4 of the Main Event, and were looking to continue that run against a powerful Chinese team that have just recently regained their form. Vici, however had different plans, and a couple of surprise picks seemed to catch the Koreans off guard. First, it was the Morphling pick in game 1 that MVP Phoenix couldn’t deal with; this was followed by an iceiceice Broodmother in game two, which caused all sorts of issues for MVP. VG rode these picks and their momentum to a 2-0 sweep, advancing into the top 6. For a team that was overlooked and forgotten, though, MVP Phoenix have to be very proud of their performance at this years’ International.
>> Match Predictions Day 5 >>
The biggest surprise, and most exciting series of the day was between Virtus Pro and Team Secret. Nobody seemed to give VP much of a chance, and it certainly looked warranted after a quick stomp in game one by Secret. In game two, a pickup of Visage, Storm, Lina, Earthshaker, and Silencer proved to have great synergy and VP managed to ride a great team performance to a 1-1 tie heading into the ace match. In the final game, they stuck with much of the same core of Visage, Storm, Lina, and Earthshaker, while swapping out the Silencer for a Drow Ranger. Secret put up a much better fight in game 3, but the Visage+Drow Ranger combo proved to be the difference and Virtus Pro pulled off a massive upset, knocking out the tournament favorites.
The final real match of the day was between EHOME and Vici Gaming, who had defeated MVP to move on earlier in the day. The Chinese have dominated TI5 up to this points, and another all-Chinese affair provided us with a great series. A push-heavy strategy from Vici in game 1 was just barely enough to finish the game before EHOME’s Luna became too fat to kill, as VG took home a 55 minute win. Game 2 was back and forth, but the farm advantage that VG had built up on Anti-Mage was too much, and VG cruised to a 2-0 sweep, securing themselves at least a top 4 finish.

TI5 – Main Event Day 5 Match Predictions
Day 5 – Match #1: CDEC Gaming vs. Evil Geniuses
CDEC Gaming are the story of TI5 up to this point. They came in as Qualifiers, and they were considered one of the weakest Chinese teams at the tournament. Each of their opponents felt comfortable and confident heading into their game against CDEC, but when the games actually began, CDEC proceeded to put together a clinical, structured game of Dota, and their opponents have yet to figure out an answer. Their signature hero seems to be Aggresif’s Phantom Lancer who rushes fighting items and joins in the action very early in the game.
Evil Geniuses are the only top team that has lived up to the billing so far. Though they, admittedly, have not really been tested so far, they have done fairly well with the opponents that their schedule laid out for them. Sumail has been as standout so far in this tournament, nearly winning a number of games single handedly. Whether it is on a Windranger, a Lina, a Storm, or an Ember Spirit, he seems to have a strong laning phase, often solo-killing the opponent mid, and he has a great map presence in the mid-game. Already the most successful 16 year old in Dota, he is looking to take it one step further with a TI title.
Prediction: While Evil Geniuses came into the tournament as a much higher ranked team, the precision, calculation, and skill that CDEC have shown throughout the tournament have definitely closed the gap, if not surpassed EG. EG have been impressive as well, but have not been tested by a hugely difficult quality of competition yet. Meanwhile, CDEC have teared through some of the top teams in Dota, including LGD. Although EG did beat them 2-0 in the Group Stages, the events of the Main Event have seemed to lift CDEC to another level. They should put up a tougher fight in round 2.
>> Result Prediction: 2-1 CDEC Gaming
Day 5 – Match #2: LGD Gaming vs. Virtus Pro
LGD Gaming were considered a top team coming into Ti5 and delivered throughout, until they ran into an insanely hot CDEC team. Despite dropping into the Lower Bracket, they still have a good shot to recover and make a run at the title. Experience, talent, and teamwork combine in a perfect mix on this team. Under the leadership of xiao8, they have as good of a chance as anyone to win it all still.
Virtus Pro are looking to make 2015 their year. Coming out of the relative unknown, they have made a big splash at the International. They capped off their great TI5 run, so far, with a 2-1 win against the favorites, Team Secret. With a win against the best team already under their belts, you know that the Russians feel like they can play with and beat anyone. So while LGD Gaming is indeed a tough foe, Virtus Pro has to be eager to get this series underway.
Prediction: This year’s tournament seems to be the year of the underdogs, and that trend has a great chance of continuing on Day 5. LGD is great and they are playing pretty good Dota even, but Virtus Pro are looking to have the run of a lifetime and are completely on top of their game at the moment. As the last hope of CIS Dota, VP will have much of the European scene backing them and they will look to ride their adrenaline to another huge upset as they make their way towards the Grand Finals.
>> Result Prediction: 2-1 Virtus Pro
