Schedule for the Shanghai Winter Major 2016

The first Dota 2 Major of the year 2016 is the Winter Major – or Shanghai Major. For this one, Valve will keep the same format as the Frankfurt Major as it seems to have worked pretty well. This tournament begins with a GSL format Group Stage and follows up with a double-elimination format Playoffs—or Main Event. This Winter Major 2016 starts with the Group Stage from February 25 to the 28th and finishes with the Main Event from March 2 to the 6th.

Shanghai Major Icon Shanghai 2016 Schedule — Group Stage:

The Group Stage will take place from the 25th to the 28th of February. This phase consists in a GSL format similar to the Group Stage of the Frankfurt Major 2015. The 16 teams will be divided into four groups where the 2 best teams in each one will start in the Upper Bracket of the Playoffs. All matches are best of three.

The first day of the Group Stage (February 25) will start at 2:00 a.m. CET, while the following days will start at 8:00 a.m. CET.

The Group Stage is usually a really important step to take into account when betting. The winners of this round robin will have an undeniable higher chance of taking the tournament. Nevertheless, sometimes miracles happen and a team starting in the Lower Bracket can take the first place. It has only happened—in a Valve tournament—in the Frankfurt Major 2015 with OG.

Shanghai Major Icon Shanghai Major 2016 Schedule — Main Event:

After the Group Stage is done, there will be 2 days for the teams to rest and prepare for the Main Event to take place from March 2 to the 6th. In this phase, if a team loses in the Upper Bracket, they will have another chance to win the Shanghai Major by dropping to the Lower Bracket. On the other hand, teams in the Lower Bracket will not be given a chance if they lose a match. The first round in the Lower Bracket will be a Bo1, the Grand Finals Bo5 and the rest of the games will be Bo3.

All matches for the first day (March 2) will start at 3:00 a.m. CET and will only feature the first round of the Lower Bracket Bo1 games. The schedule of the remaining days is set to start at 6:00 a.m. CET.

A team starting in the Lower Bracket will need to have a winning streak of 7 series to be able to win the tournament, while a team starting in the Upper Bracket can take the tournament with a winning streak of 4 series—and they still get the opportunity to take the tournament by going to the Lower Bracket after losing a series. It’s extremely hard for a team starting in the Lower Bracket to win this Major. This is why the Group Stage is as important as this double-elimination bracket in the Main Event.
