Manila Major 2016 | Dota 2 Tournament Overview

Manila Major Tournament Dota 2 LogoAfter the many surprises the Shanghai Major brought, we are already getting ready for the next big tournament from Valve: The Manila Major 2016. This one will take place in the SEA region, which is also becoming more relevant in the Dota 2 professional scene. The Korean team MVP took the latest big tournament and they are now joining as one of the favorites to this Spring Major. Their outstanding performance in Shanghai and at WePlay Season 3 earned them a direct invite. On the other hand, Fnatic seem to be the only team that has been able to beat MVP recently without much trouble, and they’re also from SEA. We can now include SEA as one of the most important Dota 2 regions, not only thanks to their powerful teams, but also because they are now starting to host premium tournaments. This is what makes this Spring Major different and something you shouldn’t miss; will a SEA team finally take a Valve tournament?

As usual, the Manila Major 2016 will feature an impressive pool of $3,000,000 and 16 teams. Even if a participating team doesn’t win a single game, they will still take home at least $30,000. This makes it the most important tournament before The International 2016.

Dota 2 Icon Manila Major Dota 2 Betting and Odds

If you like Dota 2, you might know about the seasonal Major tournaments that the company Valve launched last year. These have turned into the most important championships after the International. This is one of the most important times in the life of these players, and betting on who’s going to get the best results can certainly make things more interesting. The Manila Major will run from June 3 to the 12th and all kinds of betting options will be available for this 3 million dollar tournament.

For this Manila Major –also known as Spring Major–, you will be able to bet on different kinds of results. There is wagering and betting available for draft –which includes picks and bans—, first blood, final result, first tower, 1st of 10 kills, 1st round winner, and more.

Some of these bets can be placed before a game starts, but there will also be betting available for in-game live events. This is why you should start checking the known betting sites as soon as the games start, even if you’ve already placed a bet on the match winner.

A good example you can start betting on right now is the tournament outcome. There are already Outright Winner betting odds available you can check to get an idea of how much real or fake money – and even in-game items— you will be able to get if you are able to predict the winner of the Manila Major 2016. Here are the betting odds for Outright Winner. You can place your bet on this particular outcome until June 3.

If you don’t want to bet real money, remember that you can start getting a feel of how all this work by going to sites that allow PlayMoney, like eGamingbets. This way you don’t risk losing real money, and you can still experiment the excitement of betting. You can also start betting in-game items if you’re an active Dota 2 player.

Remember to check your region’s legal regulation before getting involved in these activities.

Dota 2 Icon Dota 2 – Manila Major – Invited Teams:

While Valve is used to give out 8 invites, this time they’ve decided to invite 12 teams. Their argument is that there are many good teams out there right now and it’s really hard to choose the best out of the best. Another good point is that if the non-invited teams are too strong, they will take the qualifiers anyways, so smaller teams won’t have much chance of succeeding. This has led Valve to give 4 more invites for this Spring Major. This way, third-party tournaments become more important, as the result teams get in these tournaments will certainly give them good chances of making it to the Majors through a direct invite.

These are the 12 teams that were invited to the tournament:

  • Evil Genius Team Logo Dota 2 Evil Geniuses
  • OG Team Logo Dota 2 OG
  • Team Secret Logo Dota 2 Team Secret
  • MVP Phoenix Team Logo Dota2 MVP Phoenix
  • CompLexity Team Logo Dota2 CompLexity
  • Vici Gaming Team Logo Dota 2 Vici Gaming Reborn
  • Fnatic Team Logo Dota2 Fnatic
  • Alliance Team Logo Dota 2 Alliance
  • Natus Vincere Team Logo Dota 2 Natus Vincere
  • LGD Team Logo Dota2 LGD Gaming
  • Team Liquid Logo Dota2 Team Liquid
  • Team Wings Dota 2 Logo Wings Gaming

This list gives a lot of hopes to teams that haven’t been able to make it to the big scene. Wings Gaming just won ESL One Manila, but weren’t exactly considered close to the top teams before that tournament. A similar thing has happened to Na’Vi; they had been the underdogs until the past month, where they made it to the ESL One Frankfurt with amazing plays and teamwork.

This gives new teams new hopes to work harder, and it also speaks to established teams that they shouldn’t become lazy and start underperforming for too long if they want a direct invite.

Dota 2 Icon Manila Major – Main Event and Schedule:

Valve’s first Spring Major takes place roughly a month before the International 2016. Its schedule has been released and it includes 2 days of Group Stage, from June 3 to the 4th, which will be followed by a 2 day break into the Playoffs that will run from June 7 to the 12th.

Additionally, the Main Event (Playoffs) will feature a cosplay competition, which is now becoming more frequent in these tournaments after seeing their success during EPICENTER and ESL One Manila.

Dota 2 Icon Schedule Overview

  • 03.2016 – 06.04.2016  Group Stage – The best 2 teams of four groups will go to the Upper Bracket and the rest go to the Lower Bracket in the Main Event.

As this schedule indicates, teams will want to start from the Upper Bracket to play fewer games, have an additional opportunity if they lose a series and to rest more and prepare better for the Grand Final. Although it’s extremely hard for a team to win this tournament from the Lower Bracket, OG made it in the Frankfurt Major 2015. It’s not impossible, but it’s definitely something that does not happen often, so the Group Stage is still as important as these Playoffs.

Dota 2 Icon Manila Major – Qualifiers:

Just like it happened for the Shanghai Major, there were 2 kinds of Qualifiers for each region:

The Open Qualifiers ran from the 29th of April to the 5th of May 2016. Just like for the past Major, two amateur teams from each region had the opportunity to qualify to the Regional Qualifiers –or Main Qualifiers. Even though these qualifiers are held to give amateur players the opportunity to break in the scene, some of these teams are commanded by experience veterans that haven’t been able to find a stable roster. A good example is Kaipi, which is the team that brought the debut of current Team Secret players Arteezy and Eternal Envy. Right now the team is formed by Bone7, SingSing, SexyBamboe, Masakary and ComeWithMe, and they have made it to the Regional Qualifiers.

These are all the teams that made it:

  • EuropeKaipi Team Dota2 Logo Kaipi, Rebels Team Dota2 Logo Rebels
  • SEATnC Gaming Team Dota2 Logo TnC Gaming, Next Generation Team Dota2 Logo Next Generation

The Regional Qualifiers are taking place from May 3 to the 6th. They are organized like a separate two-stage online tournament:

The first stage consists of a round-robin Group Stage. The second stage is a double-elimination bracket Playoffs.

For the Group Stage, 10 teams are split into two groups of five. All matches are best-of-two. The points are distributed as follows:

  • 2 points for a 2-0
  • 1 point for a draw
  • 0 points for a 0-2 loss

Only the best two teams of each group will make it to the Group Stage Playoffs.

The Playoffs will consist of the typical double-elimination bracket. All teams will start from the Upper Bracket. Every match is a best-of-three series, except for the finals that are best-of-five. The best team makes it to the Manila Major.
