Dota 2 – The Kiev Major 2017 | Tournament & Betting Overview

Dota 2 - Kiev Major Logo You are here:

The beginning of a new year for the Dota 2 professional scene is here with the Kiev Major 2017 in Ukraine. While Ukraine is where all the editions of the StarLadder have taken place, this is the first time it’s going to host such a big tournament like the Major. After the Boston Major has ended and giving us some surprising result with the team Ad Finem, now under contract with Mousesports, obtaining the second place of the tournament against OG as well as EG and Thunderbirds (ex-DC) fighting for the third and fourth place. These teams have now been rewarded with a direct invite to the Kiev Major 2017 in Dota 2.

In relation to the tournament format, Valve has decided to continue with the single-elimination bracket after the success it had in the Boston Major 2016, while it might shorten the duration of the tournaments, it makes it more and more exciting because of not giving a second opportunity to teams for that come back to the finals in past tournaments. Let’s not forget about the latest update to the client, with the update 7.0 to Dota 2 there were drastic changes to the map, as well as for the heroes and many other aspects of the game. This is a very important first test for teams to see if their strategies hold up for the season finale The International 2017 – TI7. Anything could happen in this tournament, no team is the winner from the beginning.

Schedule – Group Stage

The Group Stage takes place from April 24th to the 25th with the sixteen teams in one swiss group and the best five teams obtain a place in the Upper Bracket, the rest go to Lower Bracket. All matches are best-of-three.

Valve decided to direct invite fewer teams for the Boston Major 2016 going from twelve to eight, and that hasn’t changed for the Dota 2 Kiev Major 2017. This was considered a good decision by many thanks to that now other teams have more chances of participating in the tournament if they qualify in the Main Qualifiers. Teams that are invited directly to the tournament are those who had a great performance in past tournaments, for example Mousesports was a team that had to go through the qualifiers and ended up in second place in the Boston Major. And indeed, they have been directly invited to the Kiev Major. Having more space for teams that are not really popular is great to discover hidden talents.

>> Detailed invited Kiev Major 2017 team info

Apart from the usual suspects, there are two teams that stand out: The greek Team under Mousesports have received their first direct invite after their spectacular run to the grand finals of the Boston Major 2016. They have captured the heart of the viewers and gained a lot of fans with their spirited performance and visible passion for the Dota 2. In addition they have not replaced any member since their formation in December 2015, which is an eternity in the world of eSports.

Team VG.J is also a new face in the round of direct invites. Part of the Vici Gaming Organization and endorsed by the professional basketball player Jeremy Lin, they’ve been making noise in recent times with reaching the grand final of the StarLadder i-League Star Series Season 3 and only losing to Team Liquid, another directly invited Team.

Dota 2 Icon Prize Pool

Like every Major, Valve is going to place a prize pool of $3,000,000, with the only difference being how it is shared between the participants. The Boston Major gave $1,000,000 to the first place of the tournament, while in the Manilla Major the first place obtained $1,100,000. Either way, it is an enormous amount of money. It is true that no other tournaments have been able to reach this amount in their prize pools more than once except for the Internationals. But with the growth in the Dota2 community, tournaments in the future could reach higher and higher in their prize pools like the Majors. Being in the last place, or in the first place, both obtain a good amount of money for their team, that’s why this tournament is so important for teams.

Dota 2 Icon Kiev Major 2017 Compendium (Winter)

After the Boston Major, the next edition of the Majors is here, and so it is with a new compendium. The Winter Battle Pass is here for the cost of 7.99$ in the Dota2 in-game store. There are always compendiums for important tournaments like the Majors and TI, as well as for some smaller tournaments. As always, the compendium has exciting and fun challenges for players to complete in order to obtain rewards and levels.

The Winter Battle Pass is not very different from the Fall Pass, but unique as it is. It comes with 60 levels to obtain, and most levels have rewards. The quest lines are present once again with their unique rewards at the end of each one, and the different challenges for players, and while completing them, obtain enough point to level up and claim rewards. Some of the rewards are the winter treasure chest, especial in-game effect and much more.

Winter Pass: Features and Rewards

Leveling up the compendium is the only way to obtain the unique rewards that has to offer, except for the treasures that can be bought in the market. For every level a hundred points are needed to pass to the next one, which can be obtained either by wagering the weekly points given to every compendium owner, completing quests, unlocking achievements or buying them in the store.

With the Winter compendium Valve decided to have another special event called “Dark Moon” as celebration to the Lunar New Year. This idea comes from a long time ago, when Valve introduced “Diretide” as a Halloween event (2012), “Frostivus” for winter time (2012) and “New Bloom” for the Chinese New Year (2014). Some of these events were hold for 2 years and the replaced by others. For this event, players have to choose from a list of 25 heroes with some changes in their abilities, and defend the ancient from waves of enemies, and some mini-bosses. To win the game, one has to defeat the “Grand Magus” final boss of the game. With the points earned in each game, players can redeem treasures. Some features return for this compendium as they were present in some of the past.

Features returning in this Pass:

  • Evolving Courier
  • Loading Screens
  • Player Card Pack
  • Treasure Upgrade Infusers
  • New Taunts
  • Seasonal Terrain
  • Three quest lines
  • Wagering
  • Postgame Tipping
  • 3 Immortal Treasures
  • Special in-game effects
  • Rylai’s Blessing

The $3.000.000 dollars prize pool for the Kiev Major 2017 came as it is thanks to Valve creating these tournaments. The prize pool is divided between the 16 teams that will participate in the tournament. The distribution of the prize pool for the Winter Major makes it for teams to obtain a considerable amount of money, even at those who get eliminated in the beginning. For the last place in the Kiev Major it will most likely obtain $62,500 dollars for the team, but in the other part, the first place in the tournament will obtain $1.000.000 dollars for their team. Majors are the top tournaments after the Internationals.
